Nayi Chetna – 2.0

  • DAY-NRLM (Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission), Ministry of Rural Development announced its plans for the second year of its National Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) – ‘Nayi Chetna – 2.0’.
  • The meeting was chaired by the Additional Secretary, MoRD Charanjit Singh.
  • The Joint Secretary, Rural Livelihoods, Smriti Sharan, introduced the campaign to the gathered delegates.
  • It was organized to foster convergence to collectively strengthen redressal mechanisms for survivors of GBV.
  • Participating ministries included Ministries of Panchayati Raj, Women and child development, Home Affairs, Law and Justice, Information and Broadcasting, Youth Affairs and Sports, Education and Literacy, Social Justice and Empowerment, as well as Health and Family Welfare.
  • This campaign will compliment DAY-NRLM’s ongoing programmatic efforts to address GBV.
  • In addition to multiple targeted activities which enhance women’s decision making, and agency, DAY-NRLM has been establishing Gender Resource Centres (GRC) at block level.
  • This campaign is an attempt to bring together, and give impetus all initiatives aimed at fostering a societal level change with regards to gender-based violence.

MSME Economic Activity Index - 'Sumpoorn'

  • Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) along with Jocata, a digital lending transformation platform launched a one-of-its kind MSME Economic Activity Index Sumpoorn.
  • For the first time ever, this MSME specific high-frequency indicator will capture the state of India’s growth engine, its MSMEs, that contribute more than a quarter of the country’s overall Gross Value Added (GVA) and more than 40% of its total exports.
  • The currently available macro indices capture business expectations and rely on opinion or survey-based data.

FSSAI withdraws order to declare 'best before date' on loose sweets

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had withdrawn a September 2020 order that made it mandatory to declare ‘Best Before’ date on containers and trays of non-packaged loose sweets.
  • The FSSAI said that the original order was issued in parity with the declaration required for packaged food products under the erstwhile Food Safety Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations of 2011.
  • It said now, considering that the Food Safety Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations 2011 have been superseded by the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations 2020, the said directive has been reviewed and it is observed that the same requires further deliberations by the concerned scientific panel regarding the declaration of date marking on non-packaged or loose food products.

  • Mika a humanoid robot is the CEO of a Polish beverage company, Dictador.
  • She operates tirelessly, being “always on 24/7” and working seven days a week.

  • Described as a more sophisticated version of her sister prototype, AI robot Sophia, Mika was created by Hanson Robotics.

6th High-Level Meeting of the India-OPEC Energy Dialogue

  • The 6th High-Level Meeting of the India-OPEC Energy Dialogue took place at the OPEC Secretariat in Vienna, Austria
  • The Meeting was co-chaired by HE Haitham Al Ghais, Secretary General of OPEC and HE Hardeep Singh Puri, Honourable Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs of the Republic of India.
  • The open and candid discussions at the Meeting focused on key issues related to oil and energy markets with a specific emphasis on ensuring availability, affordability and sustainability, which are necessary in ensuring the stability of energy markets.
  • The two sides discussed the short, medium and long-term outlooks for the industry and recognized the important role of India in global economic growth and energy demand.

State News

GI tags of Uttarakhand

  • Over 15 products from Uttarakhand have been given the coveted GI tag by the Geographical Indications Registry.
  • Uttarakhand’s Berinag tea, highly sought-after by London tea houses and tea blenders, is made from the leaves of a plant that grows wild in the Himalayas, which are then compressed into a solid mass.
  • Bichhu buti fabrics, made from Himalayan nettle fibres, was also on the list of products that bagged the GI tag.
  • The Uttarakhand mandua, a finger millet grown in Garhwal and Kumaon that is part of the staple diet in many parts of the State, was among the products granted GI tags.
  • Similarly, Jhangora, a home grown millet commonly cultivated in the rain-fed areas of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, got a tag.
  • Gahat is one of the most important pulses growing in the dry regions of the State, whose medicinal uses have been known to Ayurveda and traditional physicians for centuries.
  • Uttarakhand lal chawal, a red rice organically grown in the Purola region, was also on the list.
  • Other products to receive GI tags included the Uttarakhand kala bhat (black soybean); malta fruit; chaulai (ramdana), a grain used on fasting days; buransh juice obtained from the red flowers of the Rhododendron arboreum; pahari toor dal; Uttarakhand likhai or wood carvings, Nainital mombatti (candles), the rangwali pichhoda of Kumaon, Ramnagar Nainital litchis, Ramgarh Nainital peaches, Chamoli wooden Ramman masks, and Almora Lakhori mirchis, a chilli variant.

6th Guinness World Record by Uttar Pradesh

  • The Uttar Pradesh government achieved the sixth Guinness World Record by lighting 23 lakh diyas on Deepotsav at 51 ghats of Ayodhya, including the Ram Ki Paidi.
  • Governor Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, both the Deputy Chief Ministers, several other cabinet ministers and ambassadors of 52 countries graced the event.
  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 52 development projects worth Rs 153 crore in Vantangiya village of Gorakhpur.
  • In 2019, The Uttar Pradesh government had entered the Guinness World Records for distributing 66,000 plants simultaneously in a stipulated time frame on the 77th anniversary of the Quit India Movement.

Asian Development Bank loan to Government of India

  • The Government of India signed a $400 million policy-based loan with Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support its urban reform agenda for creating high quality urban infrastructure, improving service delivery, and promoting efficient governance systems.
  • The signatories to the loan agreement for the Sub-programme 2 of the Sustainable Urban Development and Service Delivery Programme were Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, signing for the Government of India, and Takeo Konishi, Country Director of ADB’s India Resident Mission, signing for the ADB.
  • While Sub-programme 1 approved in 2021 with a financing of $350 million established national-level policies and guidelines to improve urban services, Sub-programme 2 is supporting investment planning and reform actions at the state and urban local body (ULB) levels.

Morgan Stanley India’s GDP Prediction

  • Morgan Stanley Research expected India’s economic growth at around 5% for FY2024 and FY2025.

First private company to secure DGCA certification for UAVs

  • Flying Wedge Defence and Aerospace has become India’s first-ever private firm to secure a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) type certification for indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology.
  • Under the DGCA’s regulatory framework, no drone, aircraft, or aeroplane can operate in India without DGCA-type certification.
  • This stringent certification process is regarded as a vital step in ensuring the safety and reliability of unmanned aircraft within the country.

India imported 164.7 litre of edible oil worth ₹1.38 lakh crores in 2022-23

  • India imported 7 lakh tonnes (lt) of edible oil during the oil year 2022-23 (November to October) against 140.3 lt during the oil year 2021-22, recording a growth of 17.39%.
  • In terms of value, India imported approximately ₹1.38 lakh crore of edible oil during the oil year 2022-23 against ₹1.57 lakh crore in 2021-22 and ₹1.17 lakh crore in 2020-21.
  • BV Mehta, Executive Director of the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA), attributed this increase of 4 lt of edible oil imports to the current low 5.5% duty on crude palm oil (CPO), soyabean oil and sunflower oil.

  • Dvara E-Registry has been adjudged as one of the winners of the ‘Smarter Climate Farmers Challenge’, organised by UpLink, the open innovation platform of the World Economic Forum.
  • The ‘Smarter Climate Farmers Challenge’ by UpLink was initiated to combat the pressing agricultural challenges of the time, seeking innovative solutions in the realms of knowledge enhancement, resource efficiency and sustainability, inclusive technology and innovative financing.
  • This year’s challenge witnessed 246 entries from across the globe.

DAY-NRLM signed MoU with SIDBI

  • Deen Dayal Antyodaya YojanaNational Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) under the Ministry of Rural Development has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to promote women-led enterprises among members of Self Help Groups (SHGs).
  • This included, first enhanced capacity and ability of State Rural Livelihood Missions (SRLM) teams to promote the graduation of seasoned SHG members into micro-entrepreneurs; second, establishment of a reliable and sensitive support architecture for women-led enterprises, involving a network of field cadres, mentors, and experts; third, implementation of standardized protocols within DAY-NRLM to support women-led enterprises.

33rd Conference of WOAH Regional Commissionfor Asia and the Pacific

  • Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying Sanjeev Kumar Balyan chaired the inaugural session of the 33rd Conference of the WOAH (World Organization for Animal Health) Regional Commission for Asia and the Pacific at New Delhi.
  • Secretary, Dept of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Alka Upadhyaya and the Indian delegate in WOAH, was appointed as the chairperson.
  • Delegates and experts from 24 member countries are participating physically, with others joining virtually.
  • The event was graced by dignitaries including Monique Eloit, WOAH Director General; Dr. Baoxu Huang, President, WOAH Regional Commission of Asia and the Pacific; Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, GoI and Dr. Hirofumi Kugita, WOAH Regional Representative for Asia and Pacific, Japan.
  • The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has set up five Regional Commissions (Africa, America, Asia and Pacific, Europe & Middle East) to express specific problems facing its Members in the different regions of the world.
  • These Commissions can be seen as fully fledged regional institutional bodies.
  • Each Regional Commission organises a Conference every two years in one of the countries of the region.
  • The 32nd Conference of the OIE Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania was held in 2021 by videoconference.

‘AAINA Dashboard for Cities’ portal launched

  • The ‘AAINA Dashboard for Cities’ portal aaina.gov.in has been made live by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) where Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across the country can participate in this pioneering initiative to voluntarily submit their key data on a regular basis, through a simple, easy-to-fill, data entry form on the portal.
  • The primary objectives of the AAINA Dashboard are to help cities to (i) see how they are faring vis-à-vis other cities, (ii) inspire them by pointing to possibilities and areas of improvement and (iii) providing opportunity to learn and engage with frontrunners.
  • While not ranking the ULBs, the AAINA dashboard would serve as a tool for comparing similarly placed cities and promoting peer learning among cities.
  • The Dashboard will present the data submitted by the ULBs on the basis of indicators across five broad pillars namely, (i) Political & Administrative Structure, (ii) Finance, (iii) Planning, (iv) Citizen Centric Governance and (v) Delivery of Basic Services.
  • The ULBs will submit their data, including audited accounts, and self-reported performance metrics by logging in to the dashboard’s portal.

Command of the Eastern Fleet

  • Rear Admiral Rajesh Dhankhar, took over command of the Eastern Fleet, the Sword Arm of the Eastern Naval Command, from Rear Admiral Gurcharan Singh, at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.
  • RAdm Rajesh Dhankhar was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 July 1990 and is a specialist in Navigation & Direction.
  • The Flag Officer is an alumnus of the prestigious Naval Academy, Defence Services Staff College, and has done his Higher Command Course in Japan.
  • The Flag Officer is a recipient of the Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry) in 2015 for Non Combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO) of Indian nationals from Aden and Al-Hodeida, Yemen.

Obituary

Padmanabha Acharya passed away

  • Senior BJP leader and former governor of Nagaland Padmanabha Acharya passed away at 92.
  • Acharya had served as governor of Nagaland (18th), Tripura (15th), Assam (26th) and also handled the additional governor of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

  • Army Medical Corps officer Lt Col Sanjeev Malik has made history by winning Five Gold Medals in 42nd World Medicine and Health Games in
  • He is presently posted in the President’s Body Guards, Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • His victories in the 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, and cross-country events make him the only athlete to achieve this feat in 2023 and one of a select few since the Games began in

World Pneumonia Day 2023

  • World Pneumonia Day is annually observed on November 12.
  • The day aims to educate people about Pneumonia and its effects.
  • On 12 November 2009, the first World Pneumonia Day was observed.
  • On this day, the Global Coalition Against Child Pneumonia launched the ‘Stop Pneumonia’ campaign, which was backed by governments and civil organisations leading to the enactment of sound policies.
  • Pneumonia is an infection in lungs caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. Pneumonia causes lung tissue to swell (inflammation) and can cause fluid or pus in your lungs.

Public Service Broadcasting Day

  • Public Service Broadcasting Day is annually observed on November 12.
  • The day is marked to honour the enormous contributions of public service broadcasting to our society.
  • The day is celebrated every year to commemorate the first and last visit of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi to the studio of the then All India Radio, Delhi, (now Akashvani) in 1947.

World Kindness Day 2023

  • World Kindness Day is annually observed on November 13.
  • The day is celebrated to raise awareness of acts of kindness in the community, emphasising the power of positivity and the compassion that unites us all.
