GI Tag

    • In Jammu and Kashmir, the Saffron of the mountainous Kishtwar district, which is cultivated and harvested in the higher reaches, has been given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indications Registry.
    • Kishtwar’s saffron production area is called locally as
    • In Ladakh, after GI Tag for Apricot (Raktsey Karpo), Pashmina, and Ladakhi Wood Carving, the Geographical Indication Registry, operating under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry had officially granted the GI tag to the Department of Industries & Commerce, Ladakh and approved it as the Registered Proprietor for ‘Ladakh Sea Buckthorn’ in Class 31.
    • Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae L) a shrub which produces an orange-yellow coloured edible berry is sour in taste but rich in vitamins, especially Vitamin C.
    • Ladakh Sea Buckthorn is a vital crop in Union Territory Ladakh, with 90% of its production originating from the region.
    • It is also popularly known as ‘Wonder Plant’, “Ladakh Gold”, “Golden Bush” or “Gold Mine”.
    • Onattukara Vikasana Agency (OVA), the registered owner of the GI-tagged Onattukara sesame in Kerala, is actively working to expand the cultivation of this unique sesame variety.
    Relatively higher antioxidant content in Onattukara sesame helps in fighting the free radicals, which destroy the body cells

Five-day Millets Festival in Indonesia

  • The Indian Mission to ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare have jointly organised the ‘ASEAN-India Millets Festival’ during which a Millet-centric exhibition is being held featuring participation from Millet-based FPOs, start-ups and Indian chefs in

World's largest single-site solar power plant

    • Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi inaugurated the world’s largest single-site solar power plant ahead of the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).
    • The 2-gigawatt Al Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic Independent Power Project (IPP) is located 35 kilometers from Abu Dhabi city and will generate enough electricity to power almost 200,000 homes.
    • The plant is expected to displace 4 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
    • The project was developed by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and its partners Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), EDF Renewables and JinkoPower.
    • It was procured by Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).
    • The plant uses almost 4 million solar panels which deploy innovative bi-facial technology, ensuring sunlight is captured on both sides of the panels to maximize yield.
    • The project broke records in terms of cost for utility-scale solar projects. Initially, the project led to one of the most competitive tariffs for solar power set at AED 97 fils/kWh (USD 1.35 cents/kWh), which upon financial close, was further improved to AED 4.85 fils/kWh (US$ 1.32 cents/kWh).

State News

World’s first 3D-printed temple

    • Telangana has unveiled the world’s first 3D-printed temple, a groundbreaking structure situated in Burugupally, Siddipet district.
    • The innovative construction, achieved through a three-month 3D printing process, marks a significant technological milestone.
    • Spanning 4, 000 square feet and standing at a height of 5 feet, the temple comprises three distinct parts.
    • Notably, the temple encompasses three sanctums, each dedicated to a different deity.
    • These sanctums include a modak dedicated to Lord Ganesha, a square Shivalay devoted to Lord Shankar, and a lotus-shaped sanctuary for Goddess Parvati.

Rajiv Gandhi Self-Employment Start-up scheme – Himachal Pradesh

  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu launched e-taxi scheme under the first phase of Rs 680 crore Rajiv Gandhi Self-Employment Start-up Yojana.
  • The website of the Transport Department will provide the facility of online registration for e-taxis, through which applicants can get themselves registered by visiting the website within a period of one month.
  • 500 permits would be issued in the first phase and the number of permits will be increased as per the demand in the near future.

Banking and Finance

6th edition of 'Baroda Kisan Pakhwada'

  • Bank of Baroda, announced the launch of the 6th edition of Baroda Kisan Pakhwada, the Bank’s annual, fortnight long engagement programme focused on the Indian agrarian economy.
  • The farmer engagement programme commenced on November 16, 2023, and will conclude on November 30, 2023, with the Baroda Kisan Diwas celebrations.
  • During the two-week long agri festival, the Bank’s semi-urban, rural and select metro and urban branches across the country will actively participate.
  • The Bank is targeting to reach 4 lakh farmers during the course of the Baroda Kisan Pakhwada through a number of outreach events.
  • During the fortnight, the Bank will reach out to farmers and create awareness about various initiatives such as the Kisan Credit Card drive in the name of “Ghar-Ghar KCC Abhiyaan” as well as create awareness on agri products, schemes/offers and delivery channels offered by Bank of Baroda for the benefit of the farming community.
  • The event will also help to promote various Atmanirbhar Bharat schemes introduced by the Government of India such as the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF), Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme (PM-FME), etc.

L&T Finance signed a financing pact with the Asian Development Bank

  • L&T Finance signed a financing pact with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for $125 million to support financing in rural and peri-urban areas, particularly for women borrowers.
  • The funding includes a loan of up to $125 million from ADB, and an agreement to syndicate an additional $125 million co-financing from other development partners.
  • Forty percent of the proceeds are allocated for women borrowers, while the rest will support farmers, and MSMEs, as well as loans to purchase new two-wheeled vehicles.

Karnataka Bank joined hands with Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance

  • Karnataka Bank Ltd.’s entered into a corporate partnership with Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Co Ltd, to distribute life insurance products to its customer base.
  • The collaboration aims to capitalise on Bajaj Allianz Life’s product expertise and Karnataka Bank’s distribution network of over 900 branches.
  • The life insurance offerings are designed to cater to diverse life stages and financial needs, providing customers with structured insurance solutions aligned with their requirements.

HSBC India partnered with UK Export Finance to support Indian MSMEs

  • HSBC India and UK Export Finance (UKEF), the United Kingdom’s export credit agency, intend to establish a financing programme of up to £100 million to support Indian Micro, Small and Medium enterprises (MSMEs) and corporates for financing their imports from the UK.
  • This partnership is expected to enhance the availability of credit for Indian MSMEs and boost trade ties between the two countries.
  • HSBC India and UKEF signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to enable them to work together on opportunities relating to UKEF’s guarantee-backed structures.
  • HSBC India and UKEF will work closely to originate, structure and extend financing and credit facilities to Indian MSMEs.

First depository to register 10 crore Demat accounts

  • Central Depository Services (India) Ltd announced the crossing of another milestone as more than 10 crores (100 million) demat accounts were registered with the platform.

Asian Development Bank loan to India

  • In a major move towards sustainable development, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a senior secured loan of $6.5 million to Greenway Grameen Infra Private Limited for the production and dissemination of 1 million improved cookstoves across the rural expanses of Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.

National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities signed MoU with Nation Book Trust

  • The National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (Divyangjan) had signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with National Book Trust, New Delhi.
  • The MOU paves the way for the establishment of a Universal Design Centre for Reading in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
  • This centre will showcase the National Book Trust’s extensive collection of publications and learning materials in various accessible formats, including physical books, Braille books, e-books, and audio books.
  • The collaboration aims to make reading materials more accessible to individuals with visual disabilities, ensuring equal opportunities for learning and education.
  • The MOU was signed by Manish Verma, Director (Offg), NIEPVD, and Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, National Book Trust India, marking a commitment to empower persons with visual disabilities and advance accessibility to reading materials.

  • Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the 8th Edition of the India Water Impact Summit (IWIS) at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi.
  • The summit was organized by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the Center for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga), spans three days.

  • The total investment proposals worth of around ₹3.76-lakh crore was received during the summit.

Obituary

Fathima Beevi passed away

  • Justice Fathima Beevi, the first woman judge of the Supreme Court passed away at 96.
  • Beevi was appointed as a judge of the Kerala High Court in 1983 and was elevated to a judge of the Supreme Court in 1989 to 1992.
  • Justice Beevi had also served as the 11th governor of Tamil Nadu from 1997 to 2001.

First-ever Khelo India Para Games

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, announced that the first-ever Khelo India Para Games will be held in various locations across New Delhi in December 2023.
  • Over 1350 participants from across 32 states and union territories including the Services Sports Control Board are expected to participate in the maiden Khelo India Para Games which will witness para athletes vie for honours in 7 disciplines including para athletics, para shooting, para archery, para football, para badminton, para table tennis, and para weight lifting.
  • The events will be held across 3 SAI stadiums – the IG Stadium, Shooting Range in Tughlaqabad, and the JLN Stadium.
  • Since 2018, a total of 11 Khelo India Games have been successfully held.

2023 World Wushu Championships

  • The 2023 World Wushu Championships was the 16th edition of the World Wushu Championships at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas, United States of America.

  • India ranked 18th with 1 Silver and 2 Bronze.
  • Asian Games silver medallist Roshibina Devi lost to Vietnam’s Thi Thu Nguyen in the final of the women’s 60kg category.
  • Earlier, Kushal Kumar won a bronze medal in men’s 48kg Sanda category after losing 0-2 to Vietnamese Hai Tran Huy.

ICC introduced stop clock on trial basis in men’s ODI and T20I cricket

  • International Cricket Council (ICC) had told that Men’s ODI and T20I cricket will see stop clocks being used between the overs.
  • The introduction of stop clocks will be currently on a trial basis starting from December 2023 to April 2024 to regulate the time taken between the overs.

AUSTRAHIND-23

  • The Indian Armed Forces contingent comprising 81 personnel departed for Australia to take part in the second edition of Joint Military Exercise AUSTRAHIND-23 in Perth, Australia.
  • The Indian Army contingent comprises 60 personnel from a Battalion of the GORKHA Rifles.
  • The Australian Army contingent comprising 60 personnel will be from the 13th Brigade.
  • Indian Navy and Indian Air Force personnel will also participate from the Indian side.
  • The Australian contingent will include 20 personnel each from the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force.
  • The exercise is aimed to foster collaborative partnership and share best practices between the two sides.
  • The exercise will also promote interoperability while undertaking multi-domain operations.
  • The joint exercise will promote the exchange of ideas and jointly rehearse tactics, techniques, and procedures for conducting tactical operations.
