Gyanesh Kumar, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu Appointed as new Election Commissioners

This is the first time that Election Commissioners have been appointed in accordance with the new Chief Election Commissioner and other Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023 brought in by the government in December last year.
According to the Act, a selection committee headed by the Prime Minister and comprising a Union Minister nominated by the Prime Minister and the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha will select members of the Election Commission.
In the current committee, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is the Cabinet Minister and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury represents the Opposition, being the Congress leader of the House in Lok Sabha.

Nearly 100 jails across the country have been certified as ‘Eat Right Campus’ by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), marking a significant milestone in its goal of promoting safe and healthy eating habits within different campuses.
This initiative falls under FSSAI’s Eat Right India movement and aims to promote safe, healthy and sustainable food in different workplaces and institutions, including jails.

Electoral Bonds Scheme was launched in 2018 to cleanse political funding in India.
The central idea behind the electoral bonds scheme was to bring about transparency in electoral funding in India.

Ram Nath Kovind panel recommends for simultaneous Lok Sabha, Assembly polls

The high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind has recommended simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies as the first step and hold municipal and panchayat polls within 100 days of the general election in the next phase.
The panel recommended that fresh elections could be held to constitute a new Lok Sabha in the event of a hung House or a no-confidence motion, or any such event but the tenure of the House will be “only for the unexpired [remaining] term of the immediately preceding full term of the House”.
To effect these changes, the panel has recommended amendments to Article 83 (duration of Houses of Parliament) and Article 172 (duration of State legislatures) of the Constitution. “This constitutional amendment will not need ratification by the States,” the committee noted in its report.

Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy 2024 after beating Vidarbha by 169 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
This was the Mumbai’s 42nd Ranji Trophy title.
Mumbai is the Most Successful Team in the History of Ranji Trophy.

India ranks 134th in global human development index According to the Latest UNDP Report

The report stated that while India ranked 135 in 2021, it had moved up to 134 in 2022.
A total of 193 countries were ranked in 2022 and 191 countries in 2021.
India’s life expectancy at birth has slightly improved from 67.2 years in 2021 to 67.7 years in 2022.
There is an overall increase (5.88%) in expected years of schooling (EYS) from 11.9 years to 12.6 years, leading to an improvement of 18 places when the expected years of schooling aspect was considered.
The Gross National Income (GNI) per capita also improved from $6,542 to $6,951

The Gender Inequality Index 2022 has been released on the 13th March 2024 by UNDP in their Human Development Report 2023/2024.
On the Gender Inequality Index (GII) 2022, India stands at rank 108 out of 193 countries with a score of 0.437. India stood at rank 122 out of 191 countries with a score of 0.490 in the Gender Inequality Index 2021.
This shows a significant jump of 14 ranks on Gender Inequality Index 2022
