Gopi Thotakura to become 1st Indian space tourist

  • Gopi Thotakura, an entrepreneur and a pilot, is set to become the first Indian to venture into space as a tourist on Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin’s NS-25 mission.
  • He was selected as one of the six crew members for the mission, making him the first Indian space tourist and the second Indian to venture into space after the Indian Army’s Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in

FSSAI gives time till August 31 to importers for registration of international food facilities

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in a recent order stated that import of products of certain food categories such as milk and milk products and meat and meat products will be allowed from both registered and non-registered foreign food manufacturing facilities till August 31.
  • This comes after the authority received representations from industry stakeholders raising concerns about disruptions in imports.
  • The Food Safety and Standards (Import) First Amendment Regulations 2021, has provisions that make registration with FSSAI a mandatory condition for foreign food manufacturing facilities which make food products in specified categories for export to India.
  • These categories include milk and milk products, meat and meat products including poultry and fish and their products, egg powder, infant food and nutraceuticals.

Revolut gets RBI nod to issue Prepaid Payment Instruments in India

  • Revolut India has received an in-principle authorization from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to issue Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI) including prepaid cards and prepaid wallets in the country.
  • This enables it to operate as a domestic player in the market, the global fintech firm.
  • This approval builds upon the existing licences which Revolut India has successfully obtained from RBI to operate as a Category-II Authorised Money Exchange Dealer (AD II) and to be able to provide multi-currency forex cards and cross-border remittance services.

Moody’s Maintains Stable Outlook For India

  • Rating agency Moody’s maintained outlook for the government of India to be stable.
  • The long-term and short-term ratings of the government of India is pegged at Baa3 and P-3,
  • Moody’s has revised India’s real GDP growth projection to 8 per cent for the full year.
  • India’s economy grew 2% in 2022-23 and 8.7% in 2021-22, respectively.

CPI inflation eases to 4.85 per cent in March, 2024

  • Retail inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) declined to a 10-month low of 85% in March from 5.09% in February.
  • In March 2023, CPI inflation was at 66%.

Knight Frank: Indian real estate market to reach $1.5 trillion by 2034

  • According to a joint study by Knight Frank India and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), The report titled ‘Indian Real Estate: A Decade from Now’ has projected that the value of the Indian realty market would reach an estimated 5 trillion by 2034, constituting 10.5% of the total economic output of the country by then.
  • The residential market is expected to lead with a value of $906 billion, followed by the office sector contributing $125 billion.
  • Also, land for manufacturing activities is estimated to generate a value of $28 billion, driven by rising demand in India, while warehousing is projected to yield revenues of $8.9 billion.

French automaker Citroen becomes 1st MNC to export EVs from India

  • French automaker Citroën has become the first multinational car manufacturing company in India to export electric vehicles (EVs) to the international market.
  • Citroën’s parent firm Stellantis was formed after the merger of Italian-American conglomerate Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and France’s PSA Group, currently sells its Jeep and Citroen brands in India.

NIIF invests $200 million in iBUS for expansion of digital infrastructure

  • The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Ltd. (NIIF) has invested $200 million in iBUS Network and Infrastructure Pvt Ltd., a connectivity technology firm, to support the growth of India’s digital infrastructure.
  • The funds will be deployed towards scaling iBUS’ operations through organic and inorganic growth initiatives.
  • iBUS is strengthening its position in in-building solutions, outdoor small cells and managed Wi-Fi services while expanding its presence in emerging sectors (such as IoT solutions).
  • Additionally, the investments will be directed towards developing new infrastructure solutions to address evolving market demands and technological advancements.

IISc researchers develop hydrogel that can remove microplastics from water

  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have designed a sustainable hydrogel to remove microplastics from water.
  • The material has a unique intertwined polymer network that can bind the contaminants and degrade them using UV light irradiation.
  • The IISc team led by Suryasarathi Bose, Professor at the Department of Materials Engineering, decided to turn to 3D hydrogels.
  • The novel hydrogel developed by the team consists of three different polymer layers – chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol and polyaniline – intertwined together, making an Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) architecture.
  • The team infused this matrix with nanoclusters of a material called copper substitute polyoxometalate (Cu-POM).
  • These nanoclusters are catalysts that can use UV light to degrade the microplastics.
  • The combination of the polymers and nanoclusters resulted in a strong hydrogel with the ability to adsorb and degrade large amounts of microplastics.

World's largest renewable energy park being built in Gujarat

  • Adani Group company ‘Adani Green Energy Limited’ is building the world’s largest renewable energy park in Khavda in Kutch district of Gujarat.
  • This park is spread over 538 square kilometers.
  • This park is about five times larger than the total size of the Paris (France capital).
  • The total capacity of the Khavda plant will be 30 GW.
  • Adani Group will invest ₹1.5 lakh crore in this company.
  • Currently two gigawatt renewable energy is being produced from this park.
  • Four gigawatt capacity will be added by March 2025.
  • After this, five gigawatt capacity will be increased every year.

  • Head of the U.K. National Cyber Security Centre Lindy Cameron has been appointed British High Commissioner to India.
  • She replaces Alex Ellis, who just completed three years in New Delhi.
  • Prior to her role as the U.K.’s cyber security chief, she was the Director General of the U.K.’s Northern Ireland Office.

IMF confirms Kristalina Georgieva for second 5-year term

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) executive board confirmed that it had reappointed Kristalina Georgieva to serve for a second five-year term running the international financial institution.
  • She is holding the position since 2019 and her current term will end on September 30, 2024.

Mary Kom steps down as Paris Olympics Chef-de-Mission

  • Six-time world champion boxer M C Mary Kom stepped down as India’s chef-de-mission for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Plastic Overshoot Day report by Swiss non-profit EA Earth Action

  • According to the report by The Plastic Overshoot Day report by Swiss non-profit EA Earth Action, India is among the twelve countries responsible for 60 percent of the planet’s mismanaged plastic waste though the fast-developing South Asian nation’s per capita plastic waste production is among the lowest in the world.
  • The global plastic waste generation has risen by 7.11 per cent since 2021.
  • The world is estimated to have generated 220 million tons of plastic waste this year, 70 million tons of which will end up polluting the environment.
  • The report comes ahead of the fourth meeting of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) in Ottawa, Canada, as the world leaders attempt to develop a legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution.

105th year of Jallianwala Bagh massacre

  • Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, incident on April 13, 1919, in which British troops fired on a large crowd of unarmed Indians in an open space known as the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar in the Punjab region (now in Punjab state) of India, killing several hundred people and wounding many hundreds more.
  • General Dyer blocked the only entrance to Jallianwala Bagh and ordered his troops to open fire on the unarmed civilians.

  • The Indian Army marks the 40th year of its presence on the strategically-significant Siachen glacier.
  • The Siachen glacier at the height of around 20,000 feet in the Karakoram mountain range is known as the highest militarised zone in the world where soldiers have to battle frostbite and high winds.
