ISKCON Collaborates with NSDC For Skill Development

  • The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) will provide vocational training to tribal and underprivileged youth across multiple states.
  • The strategic partnership will focus on skilling youth from tribal and marginalised communities in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, with plans to expand to other regions in the future.
  • Through jointly conducted short-term courses, participants will receive industry-recognized certifications via the Skill India Digital Hub platform, enhancing their employability prospects.
  • Upon successful completion of the training programmes, the skilled youth will have access to employment opportunities within the country.
  • Furthermore, they will be eligible for international job placements facilitated by NSDC International, a subsidiary of NSDC specialising in global mobility and placement arrangements.
  • As part of the collaboration, ISKCON will establish a Culinary School to empower tribal youth from regions such as Palghar and Gadchiroli in Maharashtra, as well as neighbouring states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

Great Nicobar’s particularly vulnerable tribal group, Shompen, cast their vote for the first time

  • Members of the Shompen, one of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in the country and who reside in the dense tropical rain forests of the Great Nicobar island, took part in the election process by casting their votes for the first time in the Andaman and Nicobar Lok Sabha constituency.

RBI announces premature redemption price for SGB

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the premature redemption price for Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB) under the 2017-18 Series IV and 2018-19 Series II tranches.
  • According to the Government of India notification dated October 06, 2017, and October 08, 2018, premature redemption of SGB may be permitted after the fifth year from the date of issue, aligning with the date on which interest is payable on the bond.
  • The redemption price for SGB shall be based on the simple average of the closing gold price of 999 purity over the previous three business days from the redemption date, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA).
  • Accordingly, the redemption price for premature redemption due on April 23, has been fixed at ₹7325 per unit of SGB based on the simple average of closing gold prices for April 18, 19, and 22.
  • Investors in the Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme of 2017-18, Series III, have been allowed early redemption by the RBI.

AFMS signs MoU with IIT Delhi for collaborative research & training

  • Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaborative research and training with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
  • The MoU was signed by Director General Armed Forces Medical Services Lt Gen Daljit Singh and Director IIT Delhi Prof Rangan Banerjee.
  • The scope of this MoU includes undertaking research and innovation to develop novel medical devices and focus on solving health issues specific to serving soldiers in varied terrains.

Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) signs MoU with Cambodia on cooperation in the field of Human Resource Development in Civil Service

  • Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) under Ministry of Personnel, Public Administration and Pensions signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ministry of Civil Service, Cambodia on cooperation in the field of Human Resource Development in Civil Service.
  • The MoU advances the cordial and friendly ties between India and Cambodia in the field of Human Resource Development in Civil Service over the next 05 years.
  • The MoU was signed by Excellency Hun Many, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Civil Service, on behalf of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and Dr. Devyani Khobragade, Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Cambodia, on behalf of Government of India at a ceremonial function held in Phnom Penh.
  • In 2023-24, 156 Cambodian Civil Servants attended 4 Capacity Building Programs at National Centre of Good Governance.
  • For 2024-25, 6 Capacity Building Programs have been scheduled for 240 Cambodian Civil servants.
  • India is committed to fulfil all provisions of the MOU in a time bound manner.

World Meteorological Organization (WMO): Asia Is Most Climate Disaster-Impacted Region

  • According to World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Asia was the world’s most disaster-hit region by climate related hazards last year with floods and storms causing the highest number of casualties.
  • The report said that 79 disasters linked to hydro-meteorological events had been reported in Asia in
  • More than 80% of these were related to floods and storms that caused more than 2,000 deaths.
  • Asia is warming faster than the global average, according to WMO.
  • Last year, high average temperatures were recorded from western Siberia to central Asia, as well as from eastern China to Japan.
  • The report also highlighted that most glaciers in the high-mountain region in Asia had loss significant mass because of record-breaking high temperatures and dry conditions.

SBI, HDFC, ICICI Bank among top 50 Asia Pacific Banks by Assets Value

  • According to a report of S&P Global Market Intelligence, Three Indian banks SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, have been included in the top 50 banks of the Asia-Pacific region.
  • The list dominated by mainland Chinese banks has been ranked based on their assets (loans).
  • SBI was ranked 20, HDFC Bank 33 and ICICI Bank 48 on the list.
  • Only two Indian banks, SBI and HDFC, were included in the top 50 Asia-Pacific regions based on their assets in the 2022 list.
  • This year, ICICI Bank was also included in the list.
  • The aggregate assets of these three top Indian lenders rose sharply by 5 percent to $1.51 trillion in 2023.
  • Out of the top 10 banks in the Asia -Pacific region, 6 were Chinese banks.
  • Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd., the world’s largest bank, remained the largest bank in the region at the end of 2023.

President of India presents Padma Awards 2024

  • The President of India, Droupadi Murmu presented Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Awards for the year 2024 at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-I held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The list comprises 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 110 Padma Shri Awards.
  • 30 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 8 persons from the category of Foreigners / NRI / PIO / OCI and 9 Posthumous awardees.

Mohammed Salem wins 2024 World Press Photo of the Year award

  • Reuters photographer Mohammed Salem won the prestigious 2024 World Press Photo of the Year award for his image of a Palestinian woman cradling the body of her five-year-old niece in the Gaza Strip.
  • He also won an award in the 2010 World Press Photo competition.
  • The jury selected the winning photos from 61,062 entries by 3,851 photographers from 130 countries.
  • GEO photographer Lee-Ann Olwage of South Africa won the story of the year category with images documenting dementia in Madagascar.
  • The long-term projects category was won by Alejandro Cegarra of Venezuela for the series “The Two Walls” for The New York Times/Bloomberg.
  • Ukrainian photographer Julia Kochetova won the open format award with “War is Personal”, which documented the war in her country by weaving together pictures, poetry, audio and music in documentary style.

Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai’s ‘Heavenly Islands of Goa’ 221st Book Unveiled

  • Shankaracharya of Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham Singeri Jagadguru Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Sannidhanam, unveiled the 221st book authored by Governor of Goa, PS Sreedharan Pillai, titled “Heavenly Islands of Goa”.
  • The book launch took place at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Dona Paula. Renowned Jnanpith Awardee, Damodar Mauzo, was presented with the first copy of the book by PS Sreedharan Pillai, in the presence of Swamiji.

Tilak Varma becomes the 2nd fastest Indian to amass 1,000 runs in IPL

  • Mumbai Indians’ young middle-order batsman, Tilak Varma, reached a significant milestone by crossing the 1,000-run mark in his Indian Premier League (IPL) career, becoming the second fastest Indian to achieve this feat after Sachin Tendulkar and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s joint record.
  • The 21-year-old completed his 1,000 runs in merely 33 innings as against the 31 innings for Tendulkar and CSK skipper Gaikwad.
  • With this milestone, he has now amassed 1,013 runs in 33 matches, maintaining an impressive average of 52 and a strike rate of 146.39.

Indian Pickleball Players Secure 10 Medals at US Open Championship In Florida

  • Indian Pickleball players, Stavya Bhasin, Dhiren Patel and Hemal Jain have clinched a gold each in their respective categories in a week long US Open Pickleball Championship at Florida in US.
  • India grabbed total 10 medals, inducing three gold, three silver and four bronze medals in the tournament.
  • Stavya Bhasin won the gold in men’s junior singles, Dhiren Patel finished first in the men’s singles and Hemal Jain won the top prize in the men’s singles category.

Saurav Ghosal Announces Retirement from Professional Squash

  • Indian squash player Saurav Ghosal announced his retirement from professional squash.
  • During his career, Ghosal won 12 Professional Squash Association (PSA) titles, 13 national titles, 3 CWG medals, 3 World Doubles Championships gold medal and 9 Asian Medals.
  • He also became the first Indian male player to secure a CWG squash medal in a singles competition at the same event.
