I&B Ministry organised National Conclave on Mann Ki Baat

  • The Information & Broadcasting Ministry organised a day-long National Conclave on Mann Ki Baat in New Delhi.
  • The conclave will be inaugurated by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar in the presence of Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Anurag Thakur among other esteemed guests.
  • This is the 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat.
  • “A coffee table book on ‘Mann Ki Baat@100’, was released.
  • Government also released new ₹100 commemorative coin for the 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat.

4th meeting of India-Mozambique Joint Defence Working Group held in Delhi

  • The fourth meeting of India-Mozambique Joint Defence Working Group was held in New Delhi.
  • The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defence Amitabh Prasad and Permanent Secretary of Ministry of National Defence of Mozambique, Casimiro Augusto Mueio.
  • The two sides discussed wide ranging issues, including military training and courses, exercises, medicine and capacity building with a view to deepen defence engagements.
  • The Indian side highlighted the country’s growing capabilities in the field of defence production and discussed ways to further bolster bilateral military ties.
  • The Mozambican side also interacted with the representatives of defence industry separately.

State News

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik launched third phase of 5T School Transformation Programme

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the third phase of the 5T School Transformation Initiative.
  • As part of this phase, the chief minister inaugurated 357 transformed schools in 4 districts.
  • The remodelled institutions include 106 high schools in Ganjam district, 87 in Angul, 57 in Keonjhar and 107 in Jagatsinghpur district.
  • A total of 2,151 government high schools will be transformed in the third phase.
  • In the earlier two phases of this initiative, as many as 3,981 schools were transformed across the state.
  • After the completion of the third phase, the number of transformed schools will be 6,132.

Schemes

Government released Rs 2,874 crores to PLI beneficiaries so far

  • The government has released Rs 2,874.71 crore to the beneficiaries of the production-linked incentive scheme till March, with a majority of companies from eight sectors like electronics, telecom, pharma and food processing
  • The scheme was announced in 2020 for 14 sectors with an outlay of Rs 1.97 lakh crore to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities and boost exports.
  • He said that incentive claims of over Rs 3,420.05 crore have been received under the scheme for eight sectors – large-scale electronics manufacturing; electronics and technology products; bulk drugs; medical devices; pharmaceuticals; telecom and networking products; food items; and drones, of which ”over Rs 2,800 crore have already been disbursed”.
  • Till December 2022, 717 applications have been approved in 14 sectors with expected investments of Rs 2.74 lakh crore.
  • Actual investment of Rs 53,500 crore has been realised, which has resulted in incremental production/sales of over Rs 5 lakh crore and employment generation of over 3 lakhs.
  • A maximum of Rs 1,649 crore was disbursed in the electronics sector.
  • It was followed by pharma (Rs 652 crore), food products (Rs 486 crore), telecom (Rs 35 crore), drones (Rs 30 crore), medical devices (12.8 crore), and electronics (Rs 5.3 crore) and bulk drugs (Rs 4.34 crore).

RBI cancelled Adoor Co-operative Urban Bank’s banking licence, allows it to operate as non-banking institution

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had cancelled the banking licence of Kerala-based Adoor Co-operative Urban Bank and has allowed it to function as a non-banking institution.
  • The central bank had cancelled the banking licence dated January 3, 1987, granted to The Adoor Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd, Adoor, Kerala to carry on banking business in India under Section 22 read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, with effect from the close of business on April 24, 2023.

Neobank Jupiter secured NBFC licence

  • Neobanking startup Jupiter had secured a non-banking finance company (NBFC) licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), a development that will help it dole out credit from its books.
  • Jitendra Gupta, founder of Bengaluru-based Amica Financial Technologies Ltd., which runs the startup.
  • The NBFC will be housed under Amica Finance, a separate entity.

SBI opened exclusive branch for start-ups

  • State Bank of India (SBI) opened a specialised branch for start-ups at Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai.
  • The branch will provide all banking services required by start-ups under one roof.
  • With the opening of this specialised branch, India’s largest bank now has four such branches.
  • The other three branches are located at Bengaluru, Chennai and Gurugram.
  • Mumbai houses the second highest number of unicorns in the nation after Bengaluru.
  • Apart from regular banking services to startups, the branch will also act as a one-stop shop in providing investment banking, treasury/forex, advisory and other ancillary financial services through the bank’s subsidiaries.

NPCI Bharat BillPay launched NOCS platform to process ONDC transactions

  • NPCI Bharat BillPay Ltd (NBBL) has launched the NOCS platform to provide reconciliation and settlement services for transactions undertaken on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) network.
  • The services, provided under the guidance of RBI, will serve as the foundation for the ONDC network and enable smooth, secure and timely transfer of funds to network participants.
  • The NOCS platform is integrated with banks, fintechs and e-commerce players, and will soon go live with the first set of five banks on ONDC–AU Small Finance Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, IDFC First Bank, and YES Bank.

Three new wildlife conservation reserves in Rajasthan

  • On Earth Day 2023, Rajasthan’s Forest Department announced three new conservation reserves that will protect the rare and endangered wildlife of Rajasthan.
  • These three new wildlife conservation reserves are Sorsan in Baran, Khichan in Jodhpur, and Hamirgarh in Bhilwara.
  • The grasslands of Sorsan in Baran will be a safe home for the Great Indian Bustard, a species that’s on the verge of extinction.
  • As per the reports, only 200 of these Critically Endangered birds are left in the world.
  • Sorsan will not only protect the Great Indian Bustard, but will also protect blackbucks, the state animal of Rajasthan, whose numbers have declined drastically due to excessive hunting, habitat loss and rampant deforestation.
  • Khichan is also India’s first conservation reserve for Demoiselle cranes.
  • With these three new additions, now there are 26 wildlife conservation reserves in Rajasthan.

BFI president Govindaraj set to be elected as Asian basketball body president

  • Basketball Federation of India (BFI) president Kempareddy Govindaraj is set to be elected as president of the Asian basketball body for the term 2023-27.
  • The post of the president of FIBA Asia, the continental governing body, goes by rotation through the six sub zones — East Asia, South East Asia, Central Asia, South Asia and Gulf and West Asia.
  • Govindaraj, who is currently a member of the FIBA Asia Board, will be the first Indian to head the continental basketball body.
  • He will succeed Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani of Qatar, who completed his fourth five-year term as head of FIBA Asia since 2002.

ANMI elected Vijay Mehta as President

  • Stock brokers’ association ANMI had elected Vijay Mehta, Chairman of Mefcom Capital Markets Ltd, as its President for the financial year 2023-24.
  • He takes over from the outgoing President Kamlesh Shah, the Association of National Exchanges Members of India (ANMI).

Mishra took charge as CEO of Association of Asset Reconstruction Companies

  • Hari Hara Mishra had taken charge as the Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Asset Reconstruction Companies.
  • The Association, which is the voice of all Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARCs), has been active for more than eight years.
  • Currently, there are 28 ARCs registered with Reserve Bank of India.
  • Mishra, who worked with State Bank of India from 1982 to 2004, Officer, has been associated with Asset Reconstruction Sector since those formative days (2004) till date, in various ARCs in executive and director level roles.

PGCIL won Global Gold Award for CSR work

  • Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd.(PGCIL), a Maharatna CPSU of Ministry of Power, Government of India has been conferred Global Gold Award by The Green Organization.
  • The recognition was given at the Green World Awards 2023 function held at Miami in the USA.
  • Dr. V. K. Singh, Director (Personnel), POWERGRID received the award on behalf of the organization.
  • The award is a recognition of POWERGRID’s CSR work for improving Agriculture Productivity and Rural Livelihood through watershed management, community participation and better crop management practices in 10 villages of Jaipatna Block of Kalahandi District in Odisha.
  • This is a 60-month farmer centric project started in late October 2019 with a withdrawal plan to ensure its sustainability.
  • POWERGRID emphasizes been involved in a number of CSR programs for community and environment.

Parkash Singh Badal passed away at 95

  • Parkash Singh Badal, the stalwart of Punjab politics, passed away at 95.
  • He was the patriarch of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and five-time chief minister of Punjab.
  • He also served as a union minister of agriculture and irrigation in the government of Morarji Desai in 1977.

PM Modi will inaugurate National Games in Goa in October

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the National Games in Goa in October 2023, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant
  • The inauguration ceremony would be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Fatorda in South Goa district.
  • IOA chairperson Usha said the state was ready to host the games.
  • Minister Gaude said that 38 disciplines have been identified for the Games and all the venues are ready.

  • An iconic Sharjah cricket stadium stand has been renamed after Sachin Tendulkar in a special ceremony in the UAE, honouring the Indian cricket legend on his 50th birthday.
  • The West Stand at the iconic stadium has been renamed the ‘Sachin Tendulkar Stand.

International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day

  • International Chornobyl Disaster Remembrance Day is a remembrance day, observed annually on April 26.
  • It was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 8, 2016, in memory of Chernobyl disaster.
  • An explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 spread a radioactive cloud over large parts of the Soviet Union, now the territories of Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
  • Nearly 8.4 million people in the three countries were exposed to the radiation.

World Intellectual Property Day

  • World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on April 26.
  • The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life” and “to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of economies and societies across the globe”.
  • April 26 was chosen as the date for World Intellectual Property Day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970.
  • World Intellectual Property Day 2022 also featured the first World Intellectual Day Youth Video Competition.
