Finance Ministry allows purchase of 30th tranche of electoral bonds

  • The Centre has approved the issuance of the 30th tranche of electoral bonds between January 2 to January 11.
  • Electoral bonds have been pitched as an alternative to cash donations made to political parties as part of efforts to bring transparency to political funding.
  • The sale of the first batch of electoral bonds happened in March 2018.
  • Electoral bonds can be purchased by Indian citizens or entities incorporated or established in the country.
  • Registered political parties that have secured not less than 1 per cent of the votes polled in the last Lok Sabha or legislative assembly elections are eligible to receive funding through electoral bonds.

Gujarat sets Guinness Record for performing mass Surya Namaskar

  • Gujarat etched its name in the Guinness Book of World Records for most people performing Surya Namaskar simultaneously on the occasion of the New Year on January 1 2024.
  • More than 4,000 participants across 108 locations and 51 different categories performed the Surya Namaskar yoga, solidifying the state’s commitment to wellness and cultural heritage.
  • Guinness World Records, as The Guinness Book of Records until 1999 and in previous United States editions as The Guinness Book of World Records, is a British reference book published annually, listing world records both of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world.
  • The book was co-founded by Norris and Ross McWhirter in August 27 1955 in

North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation to establish Ashtlaxmi Haat & Experience Centre in Guwahati, Assam

  • The North Eastern Handicrafts & Handlooms Development Corporation Limited (NEHHDC) establishing Ashtlaxmi Haat & Experience Centre at Guwahati with a project cost of ₹7.6 crores.
  • The Haat will have 24 permanent stalls, which will provide a market access to artisans of all Northeast states & will have an artisan residency to provide accommodation to artisans from out station.
  • The NEHHDC is setting up an ERI silk spinning plant at Integrated Textile Park, Mushalpur, Baksa (Assam) with a Project cost ₹14.92 crores.
  • It is envisioned to provide direct employment to 375 individuals and provide indirect livelihood to 25,003 households.
  • The plant once commissioned will have a production capacity of 450 Kgs of ERI Silk Yarn per day.
  • The NEHHDC is also providing market development by way of digitalization, authentication and traceability covering 10,000 weavers across 7 states (less Sikkim) in NER with a project cost ₹14.92 crores.
  • It is estimated that through this intervention of NEHHDC, there will be an increase in the income of weavers by 20-30 % in the next 2-3 years.
  • As a part of the project implementation more than 10,000 active looms weavers have been identified and registered from North Eastern states except Sikkim.
  • Livelihood Business Incubators (LBI), the Corporation has received sanction for the establishment of Jewellery and Handicraft Incubation Centre in NEHHDC under the ASPIRE Scheme of Ministry of MSME with a budget out lay of ₹1.9 crores.

North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd sanctions ₹766.47 crores and disburses ₹547.11 crores for 5338 project in NE Region

  • North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi) plays an important role in facilitating setting up of new industrial and service sector projects in the NE Region.
  • The Corporation assisted around 5,338 projects, with total sanctions & disbursements of ₹766.47 crore and ₹547.11 crore respectively, in diverse sectors – education & training food processing, handlooms & handicrafts, healthcare, hotels & tourism, microfinance etc. between January 1 2023 – November 30 2023.
  • NEDFi in collaboration with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) has set up the North East Venture Fund (NEVF), a dedicated venture capital fund, to encourage start-up ventures in the Region.
  • The capital commitment to the fund is ₹100 crores (MDoNER ₹45.00 crore, NEDFi ₹30.00 crore & SIDBI ₹25.00 crore).
  • The fund generated a lot of enthusiasm among the start-ups from the region.
  • As on 30 November 2023, a total of 67 projects were given investment commitments of ₹98.18 crores.

Rajiv Gandhi Swarozgaar Start-Up Yojana

  • The Himachal Pradesh government decided to start the second phase of the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Swarozgaar Start-Up Yojana’ to assist the youth in setting up startup units in the State.
  • The Cabinet decided to start the second phase of the scheme for setting up solar power projects (SPPs) for people aged between 21 to 45 years, and it also attempts to achieve the clean energy initiatives as formulated by the administration.
  • The scheme focuses on the installation of SPPs with capacities ranging from 100 kW (kilowatts) to 500 kW, thereby contributing substantially to the State’s renewable energy targets.
  • Under the scheme, the participants will receive a ‘monthly income’ of around ₹20,000 for 25 years for 100 kW to be installed in three bighas of land, and ₹40,000 and ₹1 lakh per month for the projects with a capacity of 200 kW and 500 kW, to be set up in five and ten bighas of land, respectively.
  • The beneficiary of the scheme will have to pay 10% of the amount as a security deposit whereas a 70% bank loan will be facilitated by the government and the administration will also provide 30% equity.

37 more products brought under Simplified Certification Scheme

  • The technical arm Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) of Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has brought 37 more products under Simplified Certification scheme (SCS)e.f. 01 January 2024.
  • This will reduce the time taken for certification from eight weeks to two weeks and promote ease of doing business.
  • These products include media gateway, IP security equipment, IP terminals, optical fibre or cable, transmission Terminal Equipment, etc.
  • The total products under SCS have now gone up to 49 from 12.
  • Further, only administrative fee will be charged by the TEC for Essential Requirement (ER) based applications submitted under MTCTE irrespective of GCS and SCS category.
  • The evaluation fee has been completely waived off.
  • This is a huge relief for the original equipment manufacturer (OEMs) or applicants as it amounts to reduction in application fee by more than 80 per cent, thereby further reducing the compliance burden.
  • Presently, there are sixty Telecom & Networking products which have been notified under MTCTE regime.
  • The Simplified Certification Scheme (SCS) is tailored for applicants dealing with Group A equipment.
  • Under this scheme, applicants submit a test-wise compliance sheet and a Self-Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) for parameters included in
  • Unlike the GCS, test reports from CABs are not mandatory, streamlining the certification process for Group A equipment.

UPI Transaction in December 2023 recorded ₹18.23 trillion

  • Unified Payment Interface (UPI) transactions scaled a fresh peak in December by clocking ₹18.23 trillion in value and 02 billion in volume, rising 5 per cent and 7 per cent in those terms from November.
  • UPI numbers in 2023 touched a new high with cumulative volume at 6 billion and value at ₹183 trillion, up 59 per cent and 45 per cent compared to 2022.

RBI issues revised instructions concerning inoperative accounts, unclaimed deposits in banks

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued revised instructions with regards to inoperative accounts /unclaimed deposits in banks to help the account holders or the legal claimants to get their monies through dedicated and more intense efforts by the banking organisations to trace the beneficiaries by various methods.
  • As per the new instructions the bank are required to contact the holder(s) of the inoperative account/ unclaimed deposit through letters, email or SMS (if the email and mobile number are registered with the bank).

IOB introduces savings account portability online scheme

  • Indian Overseas Bank has introduced ‘Savings Account Portability Online’, a scheme that is aimed at offering an easier savings account portability process for customers who move to different locations.
  • For individuals, who have to shift from one location to another due to career shifts, educational pursuits, or various life transitions, the new scheme will help avoid the cumbersome process of relocating bank accounts.
  • With the new online scheme, customers don’t have to fill out those endless forms and wait for days and weeks for the account transfer to materialise.
  • To initiate an account transfer, customers need to log in to the IOB website (www.iob.in) and access the ‘Transfer of Savings Accounts’ section.
  • Enter the account number and registered mobile number.
  • A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to the registered mobile number.
  • Once the OTP is entered, one may specify the desired branch for transfer and submit.
  • A new page opens, revealing the account number and the name and code of the destination branch, confirming the successful transfer.
  • To partake in this seamless service, customers must ensure their phone numbers are accurately registered with the bank.

GST Collection in December 2023 touched ₹1.65-lakh crore

  • Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in December 2023 came in at ₹1,64,882 crores, reflecting a 28 cent increase over collections level of ₹1,49,507 crores in same month last year.
  • December marks the seventh month so far this fiscal when average GST collections surpassed the ₹1.6-lakh crores level.
  • In November 2023, GST collections stood at ₹1,67,929 crores.
  • Meanwhile, Gross GST collections during April-December 2023 stood at ₹14.97-lakh crores — up 12 per cent over ₹13.40-lakh crores collected in the same period of the previous year (April-December 2022).

ISRO successfully launches PSLV-C58 XPoSat mission

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) kicked off the new year with the launch of the PSLV-C58 X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat).
  • The PSLV, in its 60th mission, lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
  • XPoSat is the first dedicated scientific satellite from the ISRO to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources.
  • It carries two payloads, namely POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-rays) and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing).
  • POLIX has been developed by Raman Research Institute (RRI) Bengaluru and XSPECT by Space Astronomy Group of URSC, Bengaluru.
  • The successful launch of the XPoSAT put India in an elite category, as it has become the second nation to send an observatory to study astronomical sources, such as black holes, neutron stars, among others.
  • The PSLV also launched 10 payloads developed by start-ups, educational institutions and ISRO centres.

Arvind Panagariya appointed as 16th Finance Commission Chairman

  • President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Arvind Panagariya, former Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog and Professor, Columbia University, as Chairman of the 16th Finance Commission.
  • Arvind Panagariya had served as the first Vice Chairman of the Government of India’s think-tank NITI Aayog between January 2015 and August 2017.
  • He was the former Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in
  • And had previously worked for the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Trade Organisation and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
  • He served as an Adviser to the Board of US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF).
  • The 16th Finance Commission would have to make its Report available by October 31, 2025 covering a period of five years from April 1, 2026.
  • Ritvik Ranjanam Pandey would be the Secretary to the 16th Finance Commission.

Uttar Pradesh tops in Usage Of Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS)

  • For the third year, Uttar Pradesh has achieved the highest entry rate on the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) platform.
  • The Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) platform is a concept of the Supreme Court’s e-committee and is implemented by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • The Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) platform began by preparing ‘The National Policy and Action Plan’ to implement ICT in the Indian Judiciary.
  • The Supreme Court’s e-committee did this.
  • The Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) transfers data between the police, jails, courts, and forensic science labs in the criminal justice system.
  • The Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) platform allows High Courts and subordinate courts to access the metadata of FIRs and charge sheets.
  • In recognition of the significant need to reform the Indian judicial sector by adopting new technologies and developing a National Policy and Action Plan to implement ICT in courts, the Chief Justice of India, Justice R.C. Lahoti, proposed the formation of the e-Committee.
  • The e-Committee’s mandate was to help create a National Policy that would enable the Indian judiciary to prepare itself for the digital age.

IAF to extend life of Russian Su-30MKI fighter jet fleet by more than 20 years

  • Indian Air Force is now planning to extend the service life of its Russian-origin Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jets by more than 20 years.
  • The Indian Air Force has inducted 272 of the Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft operating in its fleet and the twin-engine planes are going to be the mainstay of the force for at least the next 15-20 years.
  • The Su-30MKI is a multi-role air dominance fighter that can carry a versatile array of weapons including the Astra Mk-1 long-range air-to-air missile, Brahmos Air Launched missile, and an array of bombs, among others.
  • The Su-30MKI was designed by Russia’s Sukhoi Corporation beginning in 1995 and built under licence by India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
  • The first Russian-made Su-30MKI variant was accepted into the Indian Air Force in 2002, while the first Su-30MKI assembled in India entered service with the IAF in November 2004.
