NITI Aayog, MoA & FW and FAO launch Investment Forum for Climate Resilient Agrifood Systems in India

  • The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (MoA&FW) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) jointly launched the ‘Investment Forum for Advancing Climate Resilient Agrifood Systems in India’ in New Delhi.
  • This initiative aims to develop an investment and partnership strategy to advance climate resilient agrifood systems among the government, private sectors, and farmers’ organizations and financial institutions in India.
  • The two-day multi-stakeholder meet paved the way for discussions and deliberations among key stakeholders, and their perspectives on national priorities, investment opportunities, partnership, technical support and cooperation.
  • The Forum facilitated discussions and deliberations on six key areas namely, (i) Climate resilient agriculture (experiences and pathways) (ii) Digital infrastructure and solutions (iii) Financing climate resilient agrifood systems (domestic and global) (iv) Climate resilient value chains (v) Production practices and inputs for climate resilience and (vi) Gender mainstreaming and social inclusion for climate resilience.

Switzerland and India reach deal on free trade agreement

  • Switzerland and India have reached consensus on a free-trade agreement after 16 years of negotiations.
  • The agreement “will create jobs for the young population of India, and secure employment in Switzerland,”.

Kachchhi Kharek become Gujarat’s 2nd fruit to get GI tag

  • Kachchhi Kharek, the indigenous variety of dates of Kutch, has become the second fruit of Gujarat to get a geographical indication (GI) tag from the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDT) of India.
  • Jubilant farmers of the semi-arid district have hailed the decision.
  • In 2011, Gir kesar mango — grown in present-day Junagadh, Gir Somnath and Amreli districts of Saurashtra — was given the GI tag and in the same year, Bhalia wheat grown in Bhal region abutting central Gujarat and Saurashtra regions of Gujarat was also awarded the tag.

NSDC organizes 5-day long training program on cutting, tailoring & barberry skills in Udhampur under PM Vishwakarma scheme in Jammu & Kashmir

  • National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) organized a five-day long training program on cutting, tailoring and barberry skills in Udhampur, Jammu & Kashmir marking the commencement of the first batch of training under the PM Vishwakarma scheme in Jammu division.
  • Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, Saloni Rai formally inaugurated the training program.

Amit Shah inaugurates Centre of Excellence in Digital Forensics at National Forensic Sciences University in Gandhinagar

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Centre of Excellence of Digital Forensics at National Forensic Science University in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • The new centre of excellence at NFSU will help not only in capacity building but also in investigation.
  • In 2008 it was established as Gujarat Forensic Sciences University and later on 2020 as National Forensic Sciences University.

Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana

  • Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced “Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana”, a new initiative aimed at promoting the use of solar energy in India.
  • As per this scheme, rooftop solar systems will be installed on one crore houses across the country.
  • With this move, the Prime Minister seeks to bolster India’s self-sufficiency in the energy sector and reduce its reliance on non-renewable sources of energy.

Yes Bank becomes first Indian bank to conduct export finance transaction on RXIL’s ITFS platform

  • Yes Bank became the first Indian bank to execute an export finance transaction on the International Trade Financing Services Platform (ITFS) of RXIL Global IFSC Limited (RXIL), a leading cross-border fintech company registered under the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA).
  • This strategic partnership facilitates arranging credit for exporters and importers from both Indian and Global Institutions through Factoring, Forfaiting, and other trade financing services at competitive pricing with quick turnaround using a digital platform.
  • This is the first transaction on the ITFS platform in collaboration with any bank in India.

Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank Invests 58.4 Million in India’s Largest Renewable Energy InvIT

  • The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has recently injected ₹4.86 billion (approximately USD 58.4 million) into India’s largest renewable energy Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT).
  • Known as Sustainable Energy Infra Trust (SEIT), the InvIT is backed by eight operational solar power generation assets with a total capacity of 1.54 gigawatts-peak, strategically positioned across India.
  • Co-sponsored by Mahindra Susten Private Limited, the dedicated renewable energy platform of the Mahindra Group, and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, a prominent global institutional investor, SEIT has successfully garnered support from AIIB to fortify the development of InvITs as a prominent infrastructure asset class in the Indian market.
  • The investment not only marks AIIB’s second venture into InvITs in India but also underscores the bank’s commitment to fostering innovative infrastructure financing solutions.
  • The project follows AIIB’s initial investment in Oriental Structural Engineers InvIT in June 2019, focusing on mobilizing long-term private institutional capital for road and highway financing in India.

India overtakes Hong Kong to become fourth-largest stock market

  • The Indian stock market has pipped Hong Kong to become the fourth-highest equity market globally.
  • The combined value of shares listed on Indian exchanges reached $4.33 trillion as of January 2024 close, versus $4.29 trillion for Hong Kong, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
  • India’s stock market capitalszation crossed $4 trillion for the first time on December 5, 2023, with about half of that reportedly coming in the past four years.
  • The top three stock markets are the U.S., China, and Japan.

Science and Technology

Central government launches 'Anuvadini' app to provide study materials in regional languages

  • In a decision aimed at providing students with the opportunity to study in their own language, the Government of India has decided that study material for all courses under school and higher education will be made available digitally in Indian languages included in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.
  • In an order issued by the Ministry of Education, the government has directed all school and higher education regulators like UGC, AICTE, NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU and heads of INIs like IITs, CUs and NITs to make study material in Indian languages available for all courses in the next three years.
  • UGC, AICTE and the Department of School Education have also been asked to take up the issue with regard to state schools and universities.
  • The above directions emerge from the recommendations of the National Education Policy for promoting multilingualism in education at every level, so that students get the opportunity to study in their own language, and can have better learning outcomes.
  • Studying in ones own language can provide a student the natural space to think innovatively without any language barrier.
  • The NEP-2020 strongly conveys the idea that multilingual nature of Bharat is its huge asset and strength which needs to be utilized efficiently for the socio-cultural, economic and educational development of the Nation.
  • Content creation in local languages will boost this multilingual asset and pave way for its better contribution to ‘Viksit Bharat’ to make our country as developed nation by 2047.
  • The Government has already been working in this direction during the past two years, with translation of Engineering, Medical, Law, UG, PG and Skill books being done through the Anuvadini AI based App.
  • These books are available on the ekumbh portal.
  • In school education ecosystem also study material is available in multiple Indian languages including over 30 languages on DIKSHA.
  • Competitive exams like JEE, NEET, CUET are being held in 13 Indian languages.

Awards and Recognitions

BCCI Lifetime Achievement Award for Ravi Shashtri

  • Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Lifetime Achievement Award is given to India’s former all-rounder and head coach Ravi Shastri.
  • The awards were first given in 2006–07.
  • The K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award was first presented in 1994.
  • It is the highest honour bestowed by BCCI on a former player and is considered as one of the most prestigious awards in cricket.

Shubman Gill was presented with Polly Umrigar Award

  • Cricketer of the Year award (Polly Umrigar Award) was given to Shubman Gill.
  • The Polly Umrigar Award for international cricketer of the year is one of the BCCI Awards, awarded to Indian cricketers for outstanding performance in international cricket.
  • The award was instituted in 2007, with Sachin Tendulkar being the first recipient.

ICC Men’s T20I team of the year 2023

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC), announced the ICC Men’s T20I team of the year 2023 with India’s Suryakumar Yadav as captain of it.
  • Spinner Ravi Bishnoi, pacer Arshdeep Singh, and opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal were the Indians in the team.
  • The 11-member team also features England’s Phil Salt, West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran, New Zealand’s Mark Chapman, Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza and Richard Ngarava, Uganda’s Alpesh Ramjani, and Ireland’s Mark Adair.
  • This was the second time in a row that Suryakumar Yadav found a place in the team of the year.
  • Last time around, he was announced as the winner of the men’s T20I player of the year award for 2022 as well.

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC), announced the ICC Women’s T20I team of the year 2023 with Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu as captain of the team.
  • Deepti Sharma is the lone Indian representative in the team that features four Australians — Beth Mooney (wk), Ellyse Perry, Ash Gardner, and Megan Schutt. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone from England, Laura Wolvaardt from South Africa, Hayley Matthews from West Indies, and New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr are the remaining members of the side.

  • Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti is celebrated every year on January 23 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose.

  • 2024 marks the 127th Birth Anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
  • Subhas Chandra Bose was born on 23 January 1897 in Cuttack, Odisha.

2nd edition of India-Egypt Joint Special Forces Exercise CYCLONE

  • The Indian Army contingent comprising 25 personnel reached Egypt to take part in the 2nd edition of India-Egypt Joint Special Forces Exercise CYCLONE.
