National Ropeways Development Programme “Parvatmala Pariyojana”
- The National Ropeways Development Programme, known as the ‘Parvatmala Pariyojana’, is set to undertake over 200 projects over the next five years, with a total estimated cost of ₹1.25 lakh crore.
- Under the National Ropeways Development Programme, 60% of construction support is provided under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM for Ropeways), compared to the 40% support provided under National Highways.
- This strategic move aims to attract more private players for the development of ropeways under the Parvatmala Pariyojana.
- the initiative within the broader context of India’s economic ambitions, stating that the country is on its way to becoming a $5 trillion economy, in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sweden set to become NATO member as Turkey approves its membership bid
- Turkey’s general assembly, where President Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling alliance holds a majority, voted 287-55 to approve the application that Sweden first made in 2022 to bolster its security in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
- All NATO members need to approve applications from countries seeking to join the alliance.
- On 4 April 1949, the foreign ministers from 12 countries signed the North Atlantic Treaty (also known as the Washington Treaty) at the Departmental Auditorium in Washington, D.C.
- NATO’s founding member countries were: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States.
- Joining the original signatories were Greece and Turkey (1952); West Germany (1955; from 1990 as Germany); Spain (1982); the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland (1999); Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia (2004); Albania and Croatia (2009); Montenegro (2017); North Macedonia (2020); and Finland (2023).

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar Inaugurates Synopsys’ Chip Design Centre in Noida
- Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and Jal Shakti, inaugurated Synopsys’ Chip Design Centre at DLF Tech Park in Noida.
- The event drew a distinguished audience, including senior leadership, employees, partners, and delegates from Synopsys.
- Synopsys offers a diverse design portfolio, including silicon to software, which has played a pivotal role in generating $5.9 billion in revenue.
- As a dominant force in EDA tools and Interface, Foundation, & Physical IPs, Synopsys has secured a prominent position within the industry.
- Demonstrating confidence in Indian design talent, Synopsys has established the second-largest design center in India, extending beyond its headquarters.
- This center is now the workplace for around 6,000 engineers from India, constituting 27% of their global design workforce.
- While it’s a well-established fact that 20% of global VLSI/Chip designers originate from India, the expanding presence of Synopsys in Noida, initially hosting 1650 engineers, underscores the growing ecosystem of fabless chip design and innovation in India.
- Synopsys’ Indian engineers play a pivotal role not only in every aspect of the semiconductor chip/IP Cores design cycle but also contribute significantly to the success stories of leading semiconductor companies.

Agreements and MoUs signed
Ministry of Rural Development and Lady Irwin College renews MoU for ROSHNI-CWCSA
- Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM), Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), and Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi, have renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
- During the five-year term of MoU, MoRD will work with ROSHNI – Centre of Women Collectives led Social Action (CWCSA), to strengthen interventions for better results of Food, Nutrition, Health and WASH (FNHW) for rural communities.
- This partnership will strengthen nutrition, gender equity and livelihoods for women.
- The FNHW interventions through Pariwar Chaupal should be replicated in other States as well as integration of MIS into the system for attaining nutrition sufficiency.
- ROSHNI-CWCSA is supported by UNICEF India technically and financially. Currently, ROSHNI-CWCSA is serving as a technical support unit at national level to DAY-NRLM and is embedded in the Department of Development Communication and Extension, Lady Irwin College.
- ROSHNI assists DAY-NRLM to improve food, nutrition, health, and WASH (FNHW) outcomes for 96 crore Self Help Group (SHG) members and their households across the country.

Corning JV signs pact with Tamil Nadu government for glass-making unit
- Gorilla glass maker Corning, a key Apple supplier, said its joint venture with Optiemus Infracom, Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies Private Limited (BIG Tech), will set up a new facility for the production of cover glass manufacturing at SIPCOT Pillaipakkam in Kanchipuram district at an investment of ₹1,003 crore, with a potential for creating 840 jobs.
- BIG Tech has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government for the purpose.
NIMHANS & Dementia India Alliance signs MoU to promote the cause of dementia
- National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) and Dementia India Alliance (DIA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on advocacy, outreach, training, research work and support services for dementia care.
- According to Bengaluru-based NIMHANS, a premier institute for mental health and neuroscience in India, the collaboration aims to improve the overall quality of life of persons with dementia and their family caregivers through various modalities.
- NIMHANS and DIA are also working with the Department of Health and Family Welfare in the State on the Karnataka State Dementia Action Plan, aligning with the World Health Organisation’s Global Dementia Action Plan.
- Both will conduct joint research projects to develop evidence-based best practices in dementia care, adding, this will include research on the identification, prevention, and management of dementia.

- The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah addressed the 5th International and 44th All India Criminology Conference of the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
- The conference is being held on the topic of Forensic Behavioural Science and this is an emerging field.
- The Criminology Conference entails two of the major issues incorporated in these three laws: firstly, to deliver timely justice, and secondly, to curb crimes by increasing the conviction rate.
Acquisitions and Mergers
Competition Commission of India (CCI) has granted approval to several combinations
- The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has granted approval to several combinations, including the Sajjan Jindal-promoted JSW Group’s proposed acquisition of up to 38 per cent stake in MG Motor India.
- This stake buy is through JSW Ventures Singapore, a newly incorporated entity and a wholly-owned subsidiary of JSW International Tradecorp Pte Ltd, and belongs to JSW Group.
- The competition watchdog has also approved, in a separate proposal, the acquisition of Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing (India) Pvt Ltd by Tata Electronics.
- CCI has also approved the proposal involving Burman Family entities’ acquisition of shareholding in Religare Enterprises by Puran Associates, M.B Finmart, VIC Enterprises & Milky Investment.
- This approval is without prejudice to proceedings that may be initiated u/s 43A, 44 and/or 45 of the Competition Act 2002.
- It has also approved the proposed merger of Fincare Small Finance Bank Limited into and with AU Small Finance Bank.
- The board of the bank had approved the merger in October 2023 following which it received the shareholder approval in November 2023.
- The merger is now awaiting the approval of the Reserve Bank of India.

Awards and Recognitions
Bharat Ratna was awarded to Karpoori Thakur
- Karpoori Thakur, a prominent Gandhian socialist leader and former Bihar chief minister will be awarded the ‘Bharat Ratna’ posthumously.
- He served as chief minister from December 1970 to June 1971 and from December 1977 to April 1979.
- Karpoori Thakur died on February 17, 1988.
- The Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country, has been granted to 49 individuals so far, with 17 posthumously.
- Instituted in 1954, this award is open to anyone, regardless of race, occupation, position, or gender.

Kochi to host country’s first carbon-neutral sports city featuring international cricket stadium
- ‘Cochin Sports City,’ India’s first carbon-neutral sports city featuring an international cricket stadium, will come up on 40 acres in Chengamanad village near the Cochin International Airport.
- The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) president Jayesh George handed over the proposal, which is part of its mission ‘Beyond 2020,’ complete with the initial design to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the four-day International Sports Summit Kerala that got under way at the Greenfield Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram.
- The entire sports city project entails an investment of around ₹750 crore.
- The proposed stadium will have a seating capacity for 40,000.
- Besides, it will feature indoor and outdoor practice facility, training ground, sports academy and research centre, eco park and water sports park, sports medicine and fitness centre, e-sports arena, entertainment zone and club house.
