National News

Cabinet Approval

  • The Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the scheme for promotion of Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects of Government PSUs and Private Sector with an outlay of ₹8,500 crore towards incentive for coal gasification projects under three categories.
  • The selection of entities under category II and III shall be carried out through a competitive and transparent bidding process.
  • The grant will be paid to the selected entity in two equal instalments.
  • The cabinet also approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of the Republic of India and the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology of the Sultanate of Oman on cooperation in the field of Information Technology.
  • The cabinet also approved the proposal for signing of a protocol for establishment of Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) between the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of India and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic.
  • It also approved proposal for equity investment by (i) CIL for setting up of Coal-to-SNG (Synthetic Natural Gas) Project at ECL command area through a JV of CIL & GAIL (Equity Capital of ₹1,997.08 Crore (±25%) by CIL considering a Debt-Equity Ratio of 70:30); and (ii) for setting up of Coal-to-Ammonium Nitrate Project at MCL command area through a JV of CIL & BHEL (Equity Capital of ₹1,802.56 Crore (± 25%) by CIL considering a Debt-Equity Ratio of 70:30).

Vivek Bharadwaj inaugurates the National Consultative Workshop on Devolution to Panchayats at Goa

  • Ministry of Panchayati Raj Secretary Vivek Bharadwaj, inaugurated the National Consultative Workshop on ‘Status of Devolution to Panchayats’ at Goa.
  • Technical Session on Status of the Devolution to Panchayats in States was chaired by Vivek Bharadwaj where presentation on draft report on the study ‘Status of Devolution to Panchayats’ was made by IIPA and discussion on the status of devolution to the Panchayats in the States based on six dimensions, i.e. Framework, Functions, Finances, Functionaries, Capacity building and Accountability took place.
  • The National Consultative Workshop is a vital platform for in-depth deliberations on the findings and recommendations of the draft Study Report.
  • The draft report, prepared by IIPA, reflects a thorough analysis of the current status and potential enhancements in the devolution process to Panchayats.
  • The workshop aims to gather diverse perspectives, insights, and recommendations to enrich the final report and pave the way for Ranking of States on Devolution to Panchayats.

Prime Minister inaugurates and lays foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹19,100 crores in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh

  • The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹19,100 crores in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The projects are related to several important sectors like rail, road, oil and gas and urban development & Housing.
  • He also inaugurated the ‘Integrated Industrial Township, Greater Noida’ (IITGN), spread over 750 acres, during a rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district.

Zomato receives RBI nod to operate as payment aggregator

  • Food delivery major Zomato wholly-owned subsidiary Zomato Payments Pvt Ltd (ZPPL) has received certificate of authorisation from RBI to operate as a payment aggregator.
  • Earlier, players such as Razorpay, Tata Pay and Cashfree bagged similar payment aggregators licenses.

ICRA revises bank credit growth estimates upwards to 14.9-15.3% for FY24

  • Rating agency ICRA has revised upwards its projections for bank credit growth for the current financial year (FY24) to 9-15.3 per cent from an earlier estimate of 12.8-13.0 per cent on the back of strong offtake in the retail segment and non-banking finance companies (NBFCs).

Business and Economy

Direct tax-GDP ratio rises to 15-year high of 6.11% during FY23

  • According to the data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes, The share of direct taxes in gross domestic product (GDP) rose to a 15-year high of 11 per cent during 2022-23 (FY23), but their buoyancy fell to 1.18 from 2.52 in the previous year.
  • This means that while the tax-to-GDP ratio registered a record high during FY23 since 2008-09, the economic growth at current prices could not result in as high a rise in direct tax collections during the year as witnessed during 2021-22 (FY22).
  • However, direct tax collections rose higher than economic growth during FY23. While nominal GDP rose 11 per cent during the year, direct tax collections rose 17.79 per cent.

INI Farms signs MoU with LuLu Group to export bananas to UAE

  • INI Farms, part of the AgroStar group, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with LuLu Group International to build a direct farm-to-retail partnership for the Indian Cavendish bananas.
  • This is a further extension of a long-term partnership between the two groups already working on pomegranates and guavas to take the Indian fruits to the supermarkets and hypermarkets of the LuLu Group in the Middle East.

Odisha to establish a melanistic tiger safari – a first of its kind in the world

  • The Odisha Government announced to establish a melanistic tiger safari — a first of its kind in the world.
  • The safari will be established near Baripada, district headquarter town of
  • An area of 200 hectares adjoining National Highway-18 has been identified for the purpose.
  • About 100 ha will be the display area and the balance area shall be utilised for creation of veterinary care facilities, including rescue centre, staff infrastructure and visitor amenities.
  • The STR is the only home for melanistic tigers in wild in the world.
  • As per the last All India Tiger Estimation Report published by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in 2018, melanistic tigers have been found in wild only in the Similipal Tiger Reserve.

Power

Centre begins re-auction for 10 GWh tranche of ACC battery PLI scheme

  • The Centre announced re-bidding for the 10 Gigawatt hour (Gwh) tranche of the total 20 GWh capacity under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for the advanced chemistry cell (ACC) battery storage.
  • A budgetary outlay of ₹3,620 crore has been earmarked as the incentive against setting up this battery manufacturing capacity in the latest round.
  • In the current bidding process, the prospective applicants can submit their bids to set up a domestic manufacturing facility for ACC, which will help them qualify for incentives under the PLI ACC scheme.

Acquisitions and Mergers

SoftBank entity sells 2% stake worth ₹950 crore in Paytm parent

  • Japanese investor SoftBank has offloaded two per cent of its stake in One 97 Communications, the parent company of fintech major Paytm.
  • After selling a 2 per cent stake in the fintech company, SoftBank’s total shareholding has come down to 06 per cent.
  • The company held a 24 per cent stake in February 2023.
  • The current 2 per cent stake sale has yielded SoftBank close to ₹950 crore.

LIC gets RBI nod for 9.99% stake buy in HDFC Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India approved insurance behemoth Life Insurance Corporation of India’s (LIC) application to acquire up to 99 per cent aggregate holding of paid-up share capital in HDFC Bank, the country’s largest private sector bank.

Justice Prasanna B Varale sworn in as Supreme Court Judge

  • Justice Prasanna B Varale was sworn in as a Supreme Court judge, taking the court back to its full working strength of 34.
  • Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud administered the oath of office to Justice Varale, who was formerly the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court.

Anshu Mathur takes charge as Chief Adviser (Cost) in Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance

  • Ashu Mathur, Indian Cost Accounts Service (ICoAS), Chief Adviser (Cost), Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, has assumed the charge in Level-17 (Apex level).
  • Prior to assuming the charge, Ashu Mathur, a 1991-batch officer of the ICoAS, was holding the charge of Additional Chief Adviser (Cost).

Gallantry Awards 2024

  • President of India Droupadi Murmu has approved Gallantry awards to 80 Armed Forces personnel, including 12 posthumous, on the evening of 75th Republic Day.
  • These include 6 Kirti Chakras, including 3 posthumous; 16 Shaurya Chakras, including 2 posthumous; 53 Sena Medals, including 7posthumous; 1 Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry) and 4 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).
  • Ashok Chakra is India’s highest peacetime gallantry award
  • Kirti Chakra is India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award
  • Shaurya Chakra is the third-highest peacetime award.
  • The President also approved 311 defence decorations to Armed Forces and other personnel.
  • These include 31 Param Vishisht Seva Medals; 4 Uttam Yudh Seva Medals; 2 Bar to Ati Vishisht Seva Medals; 59 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals; 10 Yudh Seva Medals; 8 Bar to Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty); 38 Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty); 10 Nao Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty); 14 Vayu Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty); 5 Bar to Vishisht Seva Medal and 130 Vishisht Seva Medals.

Padma Awards 2024

  • Five Padma Vibhushan, seventeen Padma Bhushan and hundred-and-ten Padma Shri Awards were approved for conferment by President Droupadi Murmu on outstanding achievers and contributors, which included 30 women, and 8 foreigners, NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin and 9 of them received the awards posthumously.

Important Days

National Voters’ Day

  • The 14th National Voters’ Day was celebrated across the country on January 25.
  • It has been started from 25 January 2011 to mark the foundation day of Election Commission of India (1950).
  • The main purpose of the NVD celebration is to create electoral awareness amongst citizens and encourage them to participate in the electoral process.
  • Theme – ‘Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure’
  • A commemorative postage stamp themed “Inclusive Elections” was released to celebrate the Election Commission of India’s 75th year of service to the Nation in light of the 2024 Parliamentary Elections.
  • The first copy of the ECI Publication ‘Initiatives of ECI for Parliamentary Elections 2024’ was presented to the Hon’ble President by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.
  • A short film to promote voter awareness – ‘My Vote My Duty’ produced by ECI in association with renowned filmmaker Raj Kumar Hirani was also launched.
  • The short film features several celebrities with their messages to evoke the spirit of democracy and power of one vote.

Defence

Ministry of Defence signs contract, worth over ₹1070 crores, with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd for 14 Fast Patrol Vessels for Indian Coast Guard

  • The Ministry of Defence has signed Contract with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai on for acquisition of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).
  • The value of the contract is ₹1070.47 crores.
  • These multi role FPVs will be indigenously designed, developed and manufactured by MDL under Buy (Indian-IDDM) Category and will be delivered in total 63 months.
