Various road projects inaugurated by Nitin Gadkari

  • Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari had given approval for the following projects
  • Construction of 10 km long 4-lane elevated corridor on Kalimandir-Dimna Chowk-Baliguma section of National Highway-33 (New-18) in Jamshedpur city of Jharkhand has been approved at a cost of ₹936.26 crore.
  • Widening of 12.4 km long Dhrol to Amaran section of National Highway-151-A in Morbi district of Gujarat to 4-lane at a cost of ₹625.58 crore.
  • An allocation of ₹1404.94 crore has been approved for the Widening and Strengthening project of the Rafiabad – Kupwara – Chowkibal – Tangdhar – Chamkot section of National Highway-701 in Jammu & Kashmir.
  • A substantial allocation of ₹1376.10 crore has been approved for the widening of the existing 2-Lane Paved Shoulder from Tiruvallur to the Tamil Nadu/Andhra Pradesh border section of National Highway-716.
  • This transformation to a 4-lane configuration with paved shoulders in Thiruvallur district spans 43.95 Km under Package-1.
  • Inaugurated 22 National Highway Projects, spanning 268 Km and valued at over ₹4,000 Crore in Mysuru, Karnataka.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stone of various projects which includes
  • The Sela Tunnel project during the Viksit Bharat Viksit North East programme in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The tunnel has been constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at an altitude of 13,000 feet on the road connecting Tezpur, Assam to Tawang in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh at a total cost of ₹825 crores, the tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity to Tawang across Sela Pass on the Balipara – Chariduar – Tawang Road, boosting the preparedness of the Armed Forces and augmenting the socio-economic development of the border region.
  • The foundation stone of the tunnel was laid by the Prime Minister on February 09, 2019, and the construction commenced on April 01, 2019.
  • In the last three years, the BRO has completed a record 330 infrastructure projects constructed at the cost of ₹8,737 crores.
  • 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Hydropower Project of NHPC Limited in Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh, at a Viksit Bharat Viksit North East Program in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh to be built at a cost of more than ₹31,875 crores.

Minority Affairs Minister lays foundation stone for projects approved under Buddhist Development Plan

  • Union Minister of Minority Affairs and Women & Child Development, Smriti Irani, laid the foundation stone via virtual platform for 38 projects with the total estimated cost of ₹225 crore approved under Buddhist Development Plan under the aegis of Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram in the States of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and the Union Territory of Ladakh.
  • Keeping in view the present Government’s concept of विरासत के साथ विकास and ‘विरासत का संवर्धन,’ on this occasion Hon’ble Minister of Minority Affairs announced financial assistance of ₹30 Crores for strengthening Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhist Studies of the University of Delhi for academic collaboration, promoting research, preservation of language, translation of transcripts and skill upgradation of Buddhist population.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister announces extension of RoDTEP Scheme support to additional export sectors in New Delhi

  • Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal announced the extension of the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) Scheme support to additional export sectors in New Delhi.
  • He also announced the extension of the RoDTEP Scheme support to additional export sectors like Advance Authorisation (AA) holders, Export Oriented Units (EOU) and Special Economic Zones (SEZ) export units.
  • This decision comes in recognition of the significant contribution these sectors make to India’s Exports, constituting approximately 25 percent of exports.

Prime Minister launches Mahtari Vandan Yojana of Chhattisgarh government

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually launched the Mahtari Vandan Yojana of the Chhattisgarh government.
  • He released the first installment worth ₹655 crores online in the accounts of around 70 lakh women in the first phase of the scheme.
  • Under the Mahtari Vandan Yojana of the Chhattisgarh government, about 70 lakh women will be given ₹1000 every month.

NPCI ties up with Nepal’s Fonepay for cross-border merchant payments

  • NPCI International Payments (NIPL), the international arm of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has entered into an agreement with Nepal-based payment network Fonepay Payment Service, for cross-border UPI transactions between India and Nepal.
  • The arrangement will facilitate QR-code-based, person-to-merchant (P2M) UPI transactions between the two countries.
  • In the first phase, Indian consumers will be able to make instant, secure and convenient UPI payments across various business stores in Nepal to merchants on the Fonepay Network.
  • Fonepay is a Payment System Operator (PSO) and a subsidiary of the F1Soft Group.
  • It facilitates inter-bank person-to-person (P2P) and person-to merchant (P2M) transactions through its interoperable network and mobile platforms.
  • Regulated by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), FonePay is Nepal’s first mobile payment network to be licensed as a PSO.

  • The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI).
  • This landmark MoU signifies a collaborative effort to cultivate human resources through vocational training aligned with industry demands.
  • By leveraging the expertise of ESSCI, the initiative aims to create pathways for sustainable livelihoods and foster a globally competitive workforce.
  • Under the terms of the MoU, ESSCI commits to providing vocational training to PwDs in accordance with the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) course standards.
  • Additionally, ESSCI will facilitate engagement with potential employers and industrial networks to ensure seamless placement opportunities for trainees.
  • Importantly, placements will guarantee a monthly salary compliant with the minimum wages act and industry benchmarks.
  • Furthermore, ESSCI will uphold its commitment to post-placement support by offering counseling and tracking services for a minimum of three months following placement, ensuring the continued success and integration of PwDs within the workforce.

India signs trade agreement with European Free Trade Association

  • India signed a free trade pact with a group of European nations — Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein — committing to reduce tariffs, while New Delhi will receive $100 billion in investments over the next 15 years.
  • The agreement comprises of 14 chapters with the main focus on market access related to goods, rules of origin, trade facilitation, and trade remedies among others.
  • EFTA is an important regional group, with several growing opportunities for enhancing international trade in goods and services.

SJVN Green Energy Limited to develop solar projects of more than 1.3 GW in Maharashtra

  • SJVN Limited, a Mini Ratna, Category-I and Schedule ‘A’ Central public sector enterprise under the administrative control of Ministry of Power has received Letters of Award for development of Solar Power Projects of capacity 1,352 MW in Maharashtra.
  • The projects will be developed through SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN, in four districts of the state, namely, Nashik, Solapur, Ahmednagar and Pune.
  • These solar projects will be developed under Mukhya Mantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0, of the Government of Maharashtra.
  • The “Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana” was introduced in June 2017, wherein decentralized solar projects of capacity 2 MW to 10 MW will be installed within 5 kM radius of agriculture-dominated sub-stations.
  • The scheme was later reframed as Mukhymantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0 (MSKVY 2.0), with the target of 30% feeder solarization by 2025 through the implementation of 7,000 MW decentralized solar projects in fast-track mode, thus giving day-time electricity supply to farmers.

  • Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing & Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri dedicated to the nation 201 CNG Stations and India’s first Small Scale LNG Unit of GAIL.
  • The 201 CNG stations dedicated to the Nation have been set up by 15 City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities of GAIL group in 52 Geographical Areas (Gas) across 17 states while India’s first small-scale LNG unit has been set up by GAIL at its Vijaipur LPG plant.
  • Out of these 15 CGD entities, 53 stations belong to GAIL Gas Limited, 50 to Indraprastha Gas Limited, 43 to GAIL and 20 to Mahanagar Gas Limited. Moreover, 4 belong to Avantika Gas Limited, 2 to Bengal Gas Company Limited, 3 to Central UP Gas Limited, 1 to Goa Natural Gas Pvt. Devendra Jhajharia elected as President of Paralympic Committee of India (PCI)

  • Two-time Paralympics gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia was elected unopposed as the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) president, succeeding Deepa Malik.

India now stands as the world’s second-largest producer of mobile phones

  • India now stands as the world’s second-largest producer of mobile phones at the end of the decade 2014-2024.
  • India Cellular and Electronics Association said in a statement that the sector has transitioned from being 78 percent import-dependent in 2014 to 97 percent self-sufficiency.
  • Only three percent of the total mobile phones sold in India are now imported.
  • India’s mobile phone production is nearing 20 lakh crore rupees in a decade of unprecedented growth.
  • India produced 45 billion units of mobile phones during these ten years, against a goal of 2.5 billion units.

India’s most polluted city

  • According to the data released by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), Meghalaya’s Byrnihat is the most polluted ‘city’ in India, Bihar’s Araria, the second most polluted city in the country and Hapur in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh were the third and the fourth most polluted cities in India.
  • The study, based on the monthly average of (particulate matter) PM2.5, has put the spotlight on hazardous air pollution levels in urban centres across the States in the northeast, otherwise considered the greenest part of the country.
  • Byrnihat recorded a monthly average PM2.5 concentration of 183 µg/m3, which was around 60 µg/m3 higher than in Bihar’s Araria, the second-most polluted city in the country.
  • The other urban centres in the northeast which made it to the list of 30 most polluted cities in India in February were Nalbari (5th), Agartala (12th), Guwahati (19th), and Nagaon (28th), highlighting the worsening pollution levels across the region.
  • Out of 11 cities with continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations in the northeastern States, six recorded PM2.5 levels beyond the prescribed daily National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) by the Central Pollution Control Board.
  • Sivasagar, Silchar, Aizawl, and Imphal recorded monthly average PM2.5 concentrations below the NAAQS and were the cleanest cities in the region.
  • Sivasagar was the second cleanest city in India, followed by Silchar from the area at the 23rd spot.
  • The cleanest was Satna in Madhya Pradesh and the third cleanest was Vijayapura in Karnataka.
  • However, none of the cities complied with the WHO-safe guideline concentrations for PM2.5.

India receives ‘Measles and Rubella Champion’ Global Award for its Exemplary Efforts in combating these Diseases

  • India has been bestowed with the prestigious measles and rubella champion award for its exemplary efforts in combating these diseases.
  • The award was received by the ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at American Red Cross Headquarters in Washington.
  • The measles and rubella partnership comprises a multi-agency planning committee, including the American Red Cross, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), UNICEF and World Health Organisation.
  • All of these organisations are dedicated to reducing global measles deaths and preventing rubella illness.

Riken Yamamoto won 2024 Pritzker Architecture Prize

  • Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto was this week declared winner of the 202 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the highest international award in the field, which is sometimes referred to as the “Architecture Nobel”.
  • The prize has been awarded every year since its founding in 1979, and Yamamoto is the 9th laureate from Japan.
  • The Pritzker Architecture Prize was instituted by Jay A Pritzker, the late founder of the Hyatt Hotels chain, and his wife Cindy.
  • The award comes with a purse of $100,000, a citation, and a bronze medallion based on designs by Louis Sullivan, the Chicago architect known as the father of the skyscraper, which bears the words firmness, commodity, and delight, recalling the Roman architect and engineer Marcus Vitruvius’s prescription for a well-built structure.

James Anderson becomes first pacer to take 700 wickets in Test cricket

  • England cricketer James Anderson became the first pace bowler (seamer) in Test cricket history to take 700 wickets in Test cricket.
  • He reached the milestone when he took the wicket of Kuldeep Yadav.
  • 41-year-old Anderson, who is the oldest player in Test history, started his Test career in 2002 against Zimbabwe and has been troubling batters with his menacing swing from the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting to Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson.

CISF Raising Day 2024

  • CISF Raising Day is annually observed on March 10 in India.

  • CISF Raising Day is observed to commemorate the day when the CISF was established.
  • Under the CISF Act, 1968, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was established to address growing needs and was founded on March 10, 1969.

India – U.S. Maritime Security Exercise ‘Sea Defenders-2024’

  • The comprehensive maritime security exercise ‘Sea Defenders-2024’ between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) & United States Coast Guard (USCG) culminated at Port Blair.
  • The exercise was aimed at enhancing maritime cooperation and interoperability between the two forces.
  • The Exercise included a variety of scenarios including a Pollution Response Demonstration, in which Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft showcased their expertise in responding to oil spills and other environmental hazards at sea.
  • It also simulated Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) Operations for inspecting vessels suspected of illegal activity.
  • During the exercise, the Indian Coast Guard helicopter and Dornier aircraft conducted Search & Rescue and Pollution Response demonstrations, showcasing ICG’s ability to undertake aerial surveillance and rescue missions.
  • The exercise also included practice to neutralize asymmetric threats, akin to drone attacks on commercial merchant traffic.
  • The exercise also provided a platform for both USCG and ICG personnel to hone their firefighting and damage control skills through a simulated scenario, where DCFF teams showcased capabilities to combat shipboard emergencies.
