GAIL signs pact with Shell to explore ethane sourcing

  • India’s largest gas utility GAIL has signed an agreement with Shell Energy India Pvt Ltd to explore ethane sourcing and other opportunities along the energy value chain.
  • GAIL is planning to import ethane from the US to replace natural gas and naphtha as feedstock at petrochemical plants.

DPIIT organises PM Gati Shakti regional workshop in Srinagar

  • The commerce and industry ministry is organising a two-day regional workshop in Srinagar to promote integrated planning and implementation of infrastructure projects using PM Gati Shakti national master plan (NMP) platform.
  • The workshop is a part of the five series of workshops being organised by the Department of Promotion for Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in five zones – south, north, western, central and north-eastern.

PM Modi to lay foundation stone of India's first urban transport ropeway in Varanasi

  • Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stone of 25 projects worth Rs 1,450 crore for the people of Kashi, and will also inaugurate projects worth Rs 200 crore.
  • PM will lay the foundation stone of the country’s first urban transport ropeway in Kashi.
  • The ropeway costing Rs 664.49 crore would pass through five stations.

PM MITRA mega textile parks to be set up in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, MP, UP

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that PM MITRA mega textile parks will be set up in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Prime Minister said PM MITRA mega textile parks will boost the textiles sector in line with the 5F vision, which is, Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign.
  • He added that these textile parks will provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for the textiles sector, attract investment and create lakhs of jobs.
  • He pointed out that it will be a great example of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make For the World.’
  • PM MITRA Scheme was announced in Union Budget for 2021-22.
  • The Ministry of Textiles is the implementing agency for PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Scheme.

Country’s power generation capacity from solar increased 197 percent in last 5 years

  • Country’s power generation capacity from solar has increased 197 percent in the last five years.
  • The solar capacity of the country has increased from 21,651 megawatt to 64,380 megawatt in the last five years.
  • The government has set a target of achieving 500 gigawatt of installed capacity from non-fossil fuels, including 270 gigawatt of solar capacity, by 2030.
  • The government has approved 57 Solar Parks so far.
  • Nine solar parks are fully and additional eight parks are partially complete having 10 thousand 117 megawatt solar capacity.

Govt approves initiative to open new Sainik schools across country

  • Government has approved an initiative to open new Sainik schools across the country.
  • These schools would be opened in partnership mode with NGOs, or, Private or State Government schools in all States and UTs.
  • It is subject to fulfilment of qualifying requirements and they signing Memoranda of Agreement (MoA) with the Sainik Schools Society.
  • Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt said, till date Sainik Schools Society or Ministry of Defence, after due process of evaluation and approval, has signed MoA with 18 schools.
  • He said, under erstwhile pattern 33 Sainik schools have been established in the country.

India's Apr-Feb fertiliser imports from Russia highest in 3 years at 34.19 lakh tonnes

  • India imported 34.19 lakh tonnes of fertilisers, including urea and DAP, from Russia during April-February of the current fiscal, highest in the last three years.
  • Out of total fertiliser import of 34.19 lakh tonnes, about 6.26 lakh tonnes of urea was imported till February of the ongoing 2022-23 financial year, as against 2.80 lakh tonnes imported during the entire previous fiscal.
  • DAP imports stood at 7.65 lakh tonnes, MoP at 0.43 lakh tonnes and NPK at 19.85 lakh tonnes during April-February period of the current fiscal.
  • Total fertiliser imports from Russia were at 19.15 lakh tonnes during the 2021-22 fiscal, 19.15 lakh tonnes during the financial year 2020-21 and 11.91 lakh tonnes in 2019-20 fiscal year.

Rajasthan CM Gehlot approves Rs 37 crore for irrigation projects

  • Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot approved Rs 37 crore for various projects that aim to increase irrigation efficiency and prevent water wastage in canals and dams.
  • As part of the projects, the Kagdi dam in Banswara district will be renovated at a cost of Rs 10 crore.
  • Another Rs 11.73 crore will be used to line the canal from the Gajadharpura sewage treatment plant to Kalakh dam in Jaipur’s Kalwad tehsil.
  • The canal from Mora Sagar dam Sawaimadhopur district’s in Bamanwas tehsil will be lined at an estimated cost of Rs 15.03 crore.

Two day SCO Tourism Ministers’ meeting begins at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh

  • The two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Tourism Ministers’ Meeting has begun in Varanasi.
  • The Joint Action Plan on the Development of Cooperation in Tourism would be adopted during the meeting.
  • The Joint Action Plan will include actions relating to the promotion of the SCO tourism brand, the promotion of the cultural heritage of the SCO Member States, sharing and exchange of information and digital technology in tourism, and the promotion of mutual cooperation in medical and health tourism.
  • Varanasi has been designated as the first cultural capital of the SCO.
  • India is the current chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
  • The eight-member countries of SCO represent around 42 percent of the world population and 25 percent of the global GDP.

  • The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) launched a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Startups’ (CII CIES) at T-Hub (an innovation ecosystem) in Hyderabad.
  • The centre launched in partnership with Telangana government and Pratiksha Trust was inaugurated by Telangana Information Technology Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan with Infosys co-founder and Axilor Ventures chairman Kris Gopalakrishnan and other senior industry leaders.
  • The CII launched the CIES initiative in 2020 as a corporate-driven resource platform that enables the growth of successful start-ups in India.

Indians acquire 100 patents for 6G technology, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

  • Indian scientists, engineers and academicians have acquired 100 patents for 6G technology, IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
  • While speaking at the Bharat Startup Summit organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce, the minister said India is taking a leap in 5G technology with the fastest rollout of networks in the world.

IBA Women's World Boxing Championship 2023

  • Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurated the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi.

  • 324 women boxers from about 65 countries are taking part in the championship in 12 weight categories.

  • Indian boxing’s global ranking has catapulted from 44th a few years back to becoming World No 3 in 2023 as per the latest IBA World Team Rankings.
