International Union of Railways and Railway Protection Force come together to organize 18th World Security Congress

  • Union internationale des chemins de fer (UIC) or International Union of Railways (UIC) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) are coming together to organize 18th World Security Congress in Jaipur this year from 21th to 23rd February.
  • Union internationale des chemins de fer (UIC) or International Union of Railways (UIC) represents the railway sector and promotes rail transport worldwide. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is a prime security and Law Enforcement Agency in the field of Railway Security in India.
  • India will be proudly hosting the 18th World Security Congress for the International Union of Railways in the Pink City Jaipur.
  • The 18th edition of the Congress, centred around the theme of “Railway Security Strategy : Responses and Vision for Future”, will be attended by the Heads of Security of Railway Organizations from across the world, apart from the concerned officials of UIC, partner international organizations, Indian Railways, RPF and senior police officials of India.
  • The Congress will start with inaugural session on 21st February 2023 and conclude with a valedictory session on 23rd February 2023. Rest of the Congress is divided into 4 sessions with underlying sub-themes of “Protecting Critical Assets & Freight”, “Human Security Approach”, “Best Railway Security Tools & Practices across the World” and “Vision 2030”.
  • Previously, in 2006 and 2015, RPF India had successfully organized and hosted the International UIC World Security Congress in New Delhi. It is a matter of great pride the Director General of RPF, Shri Sanjay Chander IPS, has taken over as the Chairman of the International UIC Security Platform from July 2022 to July 2024.

Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launches Learning - Teaching Material for Foundational Stage as envisaged under National Education Policy 2020

  • As envisaged under National Education Policy 2020, Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launched Learning – Teaching Material for Foundational Stage in presence of Minister of Education, Smt Annapurna Devi and Dr. K Kasturirangan, Chairman, National Steering Committee on National Curriculum Framework in New Delhi.
  • In line with the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, ‘Jadui Pitara’ -a play-based learning-teaching material tailored for children between the age group of 3-8 years had been launched.
  • ‘Jadui Pitara’ developed under the National Curriculum Framework is available in 13 Indian languages.

Ahmedabad and Surat to host Thailand road show from Feb 22

  • Two Gujarat cities — Ahmedabad and Surat — will play host to the “Thailand Week Road Show 2023” from February 22, where over 40 companies from Thailand, including those from the food and hospitality sector, will participate.
  • Supatra Sawaengsri, executive director of the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce of Royal Thai Government, said ambassador of Thailand to India Ms Pattarat Hongtong will be the chief guest at the inaugural function on February 22.
  • The road show will be held at the YMCA in Ahmedabad, while it will be held on February 25-27 at Surat International Exhibition and Convention Centre.

  • MoS for Information and Broadcasting, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Dr L. Murugan declared open the Ki. Raa Auditorium in National Institute of Technology, Puducherry at Karaikkal.

PM Modi inaugurates Uttarakhand Rojgar Mela virtually

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Uttarakhand Rojgar Mela through video conferencing. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Modi said, his government is heavily investing in infrastructure in Uttarakhand to make life easier for people living in far-flung areas and create job opportunities.

Over 34.71 crore Jan Aushadhi Suvidha Sanitary Pads sold at PMBJP Centres across country

  • Over 34.71 Crore Jan Aushadhi Suvidha Sanitary Pads are sold at Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) Centres across the country.
  • The pads were sold at the price one rupee, ensuring Swachhta, Swasthya and Suvidha for adolescent girls and women. Mr Mandaviya said, Suvidha Sanitary Pads are furthering the Ease of Living for women and girl children.
  • Under PMBJP, over eight thousand 700 Janaushidhi Kendras have been set up across the country that provides Oxo-biodegradable sanitary napkins named Suvidha.

Govt extends quality control order for ferronickel grade till July 23

  • The government has extended the enforcement date of its steel and steel products quality control order for a ferronickel grade by another six months till July 23 2023.
  • The extension is for six months till July 23, 2023. The government had earlier given a three-month extension till January 23, 2023.

Gadkari lays foundation stone of 'divyang anubhuti inclusive park' in Nagpur

  • Union Minister Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone of the ‘Divyang Anubhuti Inclusive Park’, in Nagpur a facility that will have tactile pathways, touch and smell garden and a host of other amenities for persons with disabilities (PwDs).

Israel To Name a Road After Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

  • Israel’s Ministry of Culture has proposed to name a road in Israel after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

India, Nepal agreed to add 200 MW to Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur transmission line

  • Nepal and India have inked an agreement to increase the power import and export capacity through the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur transmission line from 600 megawatts to 800 megawatts.
  • The agreement was reached at the 10th meeting ofEnergy Secretary-level Joint Steering Committee (JSC) meeting in Mount Abu, Rajasthan.

India donates first tranche of 20 kidney dialysis machines to Nepal

  • On the request of the Government of Nepal, the Government of India handed over the first tranche of 20 kidney dialysis machines to Nepal
  • The Government of Nepal had requested India for a total of 200 kidney dialysis machines as patients in Nepal had been longing for them for months. 
  • Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava handed over the first tranche of kidney dialysis machines to Nepal’s Minister for Health and Population Padam Giri in a ceremony.

Cross-border connectivity to be launched between UPI of India and PayNow of Singapore

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr. Lee Hsien Loong would witness the launch of cross-border connectivity between the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) of India and PayNow of Singapore on via video conferencing.  
  • The launch will be done by Shri Shaktikanta Das, Governor, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and Mr. Ravi Menon, Managing Director, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Axis Bank hikes home loan, other loan interest rates by 10 bps

  • Axis Bank has increased its marginal cost of funds-based lending rates (MCLR) across tenures by 10 basis points, according to the private sector lender’s website. The new rates are effective from February 18, 2023.
  • According to the Axis Bank website, overnight and one-month MCLR is 8.70 per cent from 8.60 per cent. Axis Bank three-month MCLR is at 8.80 per cent; six-month at 8.85 per cent; one-year at 8.90 per cent; two-year at 9 per cent; and three-year at 9.05 per cent.

PNB hikes FD interest rates by up to 30 basis points; check latest rates

  • Punjab National Bank (PNB) has increased interest rates of select fixed deposits (FDs) tenures by up to 30 basis points (bps). The new interest rates will come into effect from February 20, 2023. The new interest rates will be applicable for fixed deposits of less than Rs 2 crore.
  • The interest rate hike ranges between 5 and 30 bps. For deposits maturing between 271 days and less than 1 year, the bank has increased the interest rate by 30 bps to 5.80 per cent for regular citizens. Earlier, it was at 5.50 per cent. The interest rate yield for FDs maturing between one year and 665 days has increased by 5bps to 6.80 per cent.
  • Deposits maturing between 667 days and 2 years will earn an interest rate of 6.80 per cent, a 5 basispoint increase over the previous rate.
  • Additionally, for FDs maturing between two and three years, the interest rates have been increased by 25 bps to 7 per cent from 6.75 per cent.

RBI cancels licence of MP-based Garha Co-operative Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled licence of Garha Co-operative Bank, Guna in Madhya Pradesh as the lender does not have adequate capital and earning prospects.
  • About 98.4 per cent of the depositors of the co-operative bank are entitled to receive full amount of their deposits from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).

Business and Economy

India’s oilmeals exports rise 167% in January

  • An increase in the export of rapeseed meal and the revival of the export of soyabean meal helped India to register a growth of 167 per cent in the overall exports of oilmeals during January. The overall exports of oilmeals recorded a growth of 69.6 per cent during the first 10 months of FY23.
  • Data available with Solvent Extractors’ Association (SEA) of India showed that India exported 4.72 lakh tonnes (lt) of oilmeals in January 2023 against 1.76 lt in January 2022. India’s export of oilmeals increased to 32.97 lt during April-January of 2022-23 from 19.44 lt in the corresponding period of 2021-22.

India's GDP growth in FY23 expected to be 7%, FY24 at 6%: Acuite Ratings

  • Credit rating agency Acuite Ratings and Research reiterated India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth estimate for FY23 at 7 per cent.
  • It also anticipates the economic growth trajectory in FY24 to slip to 6 per cent, which would still make India one of the highest growth economies in the world.

Tata Motors to supply 25,000 XPREST electric vehicle units to Uber

  • Tata Motors will supply 25,000 XPREST electric vehicle units to Uber in one of the largest deals in the green mobility space till date.
  • As per a memorandum of understanding inked between the two entities, Uber will utilise the electric sedans in its premium category service.
  • The electric fleet would be operational across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.

Kalpataru, its international arms bag orders worth Rs 3,185 cr

  • Kalpataru Power Transmission has bagged orders worth Rs 3,185 crore across various business segments in the domestic as well as international market. Kalpataru Power Transmission Ltd (KPTL) and its international subsidiaries have secured new orders/notification of awards of Rs 3,185 crore.

EPFO adds 14.93 lakh members in December 2022

  • Retirement fund body EPFO added 14.93 lakh subscribers in December 2022, which was over 2 per cent higher compared to the net addition a year ago, the labour ministry.

Lumax Auto Tech to acquire a majority stake in IAC Group’s India business for Rs 440 crore

  • Tier 1 supplier Lumax Auto Technologies has signed an agreement to acquire majority stake in IAC International Automotive India (IAC India) from the International Automotive Components Group (IAC Group) for Rs 440 crore.
  • With global revenues in excess of $3 billion (Rs 24,741 crore), the IAC Group is a strategic supplier to leading automotive OEMs across the world and operates 45 manufacturing facilities across 17 countries.

Govt forms cabinet secretary-led panel to monitor Mission Karmayogi

  • Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba will head a top panel comprising a senior official from the Prime Minister’s Office, seven secretaries, among others, to monitor the implementation of the government’s ambitious Mission Karmayogi programme for training of government employees.

B V R Subrahmanyam appointed Niti Aayog CEO, Parameswaran lyer named World Bank ED

  • Former IAS officer B V R Subrahmanyam was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Niti Aayog replacing Parameswaran lyer, who has been named as the Executive Director of World Bank.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Subrahmanyam appointment for a period of two years from the date of assumption of the charge of the post.
  • Iyer, who was working as Niti Aayog CEO, has been appointed as Executive Director, World Bank headquarters, Washington DC, USA for a tenure of three years.

La. Ganesan sworn-in as 21st governor of Nagaland

  • Ganesan succeeded Prof Jagdish Mukhi, the Governor of Assam, who was holding additional charge of Nagaland from September 2021 to February 14 this year.
  • Ganesan was the Manipur governor since August 2017 and also served as the governor of West Bengal from July 2022 to November 2022.

  • BharatPe Group appointed Aparna Kuppuswamy as Chief Risk Officer as the fintech start-up gears up for an initial public offering (IPO).

  • Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra took oath as the 14th chief justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
  • Governor CP Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office to Mishra at the Raj Bhavan here.

Tamil Actor Mayilsamy Dies at 57

  • Famous Tamil comedian and actor Mayilsamy died of cardiac arrest on the morning of February 19 at the age of 57.
  • Mayilsamy was known for his comic roles and worked in more than 200 films in Tamil.

  • India’s chess player Vignesh NR has become India’s 80th Grandmaster after he defeated Germany’s IM Ilja Schneider and won the 24th NordWest Cup 2023 at Bad Zwischenahn in Germany. Vignesh’s elder brother Visakh NR had become India’s 59th GM in 2019. Thus, Visakh and Vignesh become India’s first brothers who are Grandmasters.

  • The World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz produced a stunning performance to overwhelm second seed Cameron Norrie in the final to claim the Argentina Open title.
